Talking Papa's BWD G10 Sporty

Okay, 2.2S actually, but sporty is so much more fun to say... I've been collecting parts for this build for several weeks now, and the final pieces arrived yesterday in a box from BWD.
I had talked with Don a couple of times about chassis choices, and he suggested I go with a modified SSS-R chassis, but with shocks, similar to what he did for Hittman.
Among the changes he made was to machine it from G10 fiberglass. This stuff is significantly cheaper than cf, while retaining the properties that make cf popular for chassis building: light weight, good rigidity, and high strength. It's a perfect choice for those looking for performance on a budget. It may not be as flashy as cf, but flash doesn't win comps around these parts, so it looks plenty good to me.
It is my understanding from talking to Don that he plans to release this version of the chassis fairly soon. It may be offered in a variety of thicknesses, so that those who are weight conscious can have a thinner chassis, and those who are more concerned with durability can have a thicker chassis (my choice). Anyway, enough blabbing, here it is waiting for assembly.

It also came with Titanium upper links, but I didn't get them in the picture.

I'm really anxious to get this baby built and running, but with the holidays, it will be a few days till I really get rolling on it. I also got a set of these for the build:

They are also made of G10, so they will be ultra-strong and won't fray like cf tends to do. I asked Don to make them plain; they weigh a bit more this way, but I don't have holes to catch on rocky points, etc. I really like how they turned out.

So here's the list of goodies so far that will be going into this build:

BWD custom SSS-R G10 chassis
BWD 2.2 Mod-Locks (1")
Creation Fab Delrin tubes
Axial tranny with Robinson innards
BWD motor plate
MIP driveshafts
Fast Eddy bearings
Shaved and siped Rovers with C.I. comp cut Double Deuce foams
XR10 universals
Vanquish lockers
Vanquish C's, Wraith knuckles, rear lockouts, and servo armor
Holmes 35t motor
Hitec 7954SH servo
RC4WD Wheely King rear straight shafts
Axial overdrive/underdrive gears
Traxxas 2660 shocks with Integy MSR11 caps and JeepinDoug spring cups

I had been curious about G10 use in the crawler world. I have a Case knife that has G10 handles on it, friggin' indestructible. Now, for a set of those wheels to go on my rig.....

I think Don plans to offer the G10 wheels soon, keep an eye out for them.

Thanks! I'll be doing some studying on your thread, and will probably hit you with a few questions once I get a little further into this thing.

You know you're welcome anytime Thommy! The "tiny stuff" is what has me excited about doing this build, it's just a 1.9 all grown up!

Thanks again for the heads-up on the RC4WD axle shafts, they look plenty beefy.

Hey mate look forward to seeing what you do with this. Is quite a good parts list you got there. Hopefully in the new year my package from Don will arive and I'll get to see some of the new material.

Okay, so Christmas is past, the decorations are down and packed away, and I finally got a few minutes for myself in the shop.

First thing I did was put a bit of CA glue around the bottom edges of the chassis, just where it will rub the rocks... I know it isn't necessary with this material, as the G10 has a very tight weave, but I'm kinda OCD about my builds and it makes me feel better. Next was to put a slight bevel on the back of the skid plate. Since I won't have dig, I figure I'll be taking an occasional reverse, so I got rid of the blunt edge just to make sure it won't hang up on a pointed rock somewhere.

Then I assembled the bottom links with some of DLUX's Delrin link sliders. These things are very nicely machined and make for a super smooth transition from the links to the ends:

Not much of an update, but at least there's progress being made again...

Alright! Now give BWD some feedback on those G10 wheels, so that I can get me some! I tried to send a PM and it said that he has not chosen to receive them...... I love the idea of the G10, like I said, my G10 pocket knife is indestructible!

I don't think feedback is the hold up right now; Don is in the process of moving both his home and his shop, so it has put him a bit behind schedule. It's my understanding that the G10 Mod-Locks will be available as soon as he is able to get caught up from making the move.
