Default The Crawl Space Poi Pounda

This build was inspired by the type of trucks I grew up around in Hawaii on the island of Oahu.

"Hawaiian Style" trucks or Waianae Coast trucks like these:

I'll start with a SCX10 RTR that I've had for a couple months and go from there.
First step, wheels and tires.

Many thanks to Juan for indulging my madness and cut these "soda can" spacers, 2 1/4" wide

Mounted up 2.2 TSL's and mocked up under the Yota hilux bed section.

Thats all for now, waiting on body parts and Ti for the links

Finally found some time to put this rig together and for a full on update on the thread, but before I get started I would like to thank everyone thats helped with getting this build together

Juan for cutting the wheel spacers
Flapjack for the Yota rock rails
Neoakaj for the extra cab and interior

Thanks guys, much appreciated

On to the pictures

Got all the wheel spacers and tires mounted up. I offset the spoke pattern for a progressive look for the wheel so it wouldn't be completely murdered out.

Weighing in at just under a pound a piece

Figured I needed some muscle to push that much meat around so this badboy was poached from my super build.

I wanted to do a chassis mount for the servo but didn't have the room with the battery and some of the electronics planned to mounted up front.

Quick shot of the rear axle. Tried to use as much SST hardware so rust wouldn't be too much of an issue.

Mocked up the bed and the cab and the bed and got to work on getting the links set under the body to get the wheel base as close as possible center/center of the wheel wells.

Didn't get any shots of the build of the frontend, but you'll see that in the action shots

Bent the rock rails up to meet the body and get a bit more clearance

Need some height to clear the wheels from the body and just wanted a beefier shock so went with a set of modded XR shocks I had lying around. wrapped with losi gold springs and filled with 40wt oil.

Found a great LED set up from one of our vendors and decided to give it a shot. Wasn't feeling the blinky left and right turn signals so I rewired the board to just "on" and plugged into the RX.

Got the "guts" in project boxes, exposed wires loomed in "snake skin" and laid out as clean as possible on the chassis.

Now I didn't get any shots of the paint portion of this build, but lets just say cab #1 became a sacrificial lamb to my poor painting skills, cheap paint and not enough time to do it right
but cab #2 was spared and turned out pretty decent for my second attempt of exterior body painting

Came out more Ox Blood than primary red but I'm diggin it and offsets the red on the winch.

I did find this cool paint pen at walmart for a couple bucks and made doing the front grill pretty easy. The paint flows pretty quick and I had a couple 'drip flows" here and there but I think it looks pretty cool kind of worn or beat up if you will. This ain't gonna to be no shelf queen thats for sure

Paint took all night to dry, so the next day I got all the lights mounted into the body and buttoned up all the electronics

Now time for the part I've been waiting for, the finishing touches
Painted the lense frames with the paint pen and got to work on some decals.
Reppin' the 808 state and the best radio station in Hawaii.

A few pics on the rocks at the shop and some shameless self promotion

Front lights, fog lights and rock lights in full effect

With the lack of time I've had to get this rig together I'm very happy with results so far, and its a beast on the rocks!

Lookin forward ot the next scale gtg

Heres the tech specs so far:

4pl tx R2104 RX
HH BR-XL
HH 35T Torquemaster Pro
Hitec 7990
RC4WD winch
Axial hi-steer knuckles
STRC chubs
XR stock shocks with rod end cap mod
MIP drive shafts
Proline TSL's wrapped around custom wheels

If I can find an extra led somewhere I'll light the interior and maybe get some pics.

Thanks for checkin out this thread. Its not much of a tech build but it was a blast putting it together

Talk about wide wheels and I thought that only Germans went after the stretched look. Truck looks good.

I can't tell if you're running 1.9's or 2.2's but either way you can make wide wheels pretty easy. I think theres a thread floating around here somewhere.

My first attempt at wide wheels was to take two stock wheels, drill-out at least 3 of the beadlock screw holes and use set screws to attach them together. You will have to drill out the outer wheel center for access to the inner wheel to thread a nut on the axle stub. If I have a minute I'll snap some pics refrence

Shoots brah! Mahalos Sitting at 11.5" wide, got the wraiths by a 1/2" The wheels definitely keep the rubber side down

Nice lookin truck you got there I couldn't the get the Tamiya bumpers anywhere, lucky Gotta love the TSL's. Da best tires!

If we ever get a chance to take a vacation we'll be heading that way for sure. My wife grew up in the PNW, beautiful country

I never considered myself a "modeler: per say, but I think it looks good for my first go at hardbody scaler.

I'll be adding updates when I get the chance. Got the first cab sitting on the on the shelf waiting to get a truggy mod

hey gang, haven't had alot of time for updates with the holiday season and keeping up with the shop.

I did get alittle wobble in the front drive shaft and managed to rip the tranny off the skidplate so I have a VP tranny case on order and some more leds for a full on rock light array

I did install aluminum lower links and got rid of the stock plastics which actually held up fairly well.

When all the parts come in I'll get to work and snap some pics

Everyone have a safe and fun new years

When I first started seeing these pop up here on RCC, I wasn't sure what to make of it. I grew up in Vermont and never saw this style before, but in person this thing looks fantastic

Great job on this and where's the video??

hey gang, finally got some time for a quick update.

First is the addition of a motor filter from Biohazard Scale RC. Its made of a fine filter material that will allow air and water to flow thru the motor but keep all the nasty dirt and grime out from whatever terrain you play on, thank Jason

Finally got a matching bumper for the rear. had to fab up mounting brackets to extend it to the proper length of the bed.
Basically a couple pieces of angle aluminum and some black rattle can paint

lookin good under the bed and no more worries of bashing the bed corners

^^^^
Also installed some red Traxxas springs on the rear shocks to cut down the torque twist and got a new MIP drive shaft set for the front

Going to be working on the esc and motor set-up for the next update. Been having some thermal issues and eating up brushes faster than normal

The power plant as it stands now is HH BR-XL, HH TorqueMaster Expert 35T on 4s Lipo. If anyone has any ideas or recommendations please feel free to post up

Thanks for looking!
