Default brushless scx10?

hey guys, wondering if anyone is running a brushless setup in their scx10, i see a lot of fast machines that are mostly brushless and i wouldnt mind a bit more wheel speed for certain parts of the trails we run, is there a downside to going brushless? and is it as simple as a brushless esc and motor?

I run a MMP one cell with a 3,300kv 13.5, it's a pretty standard combo for those wanting speed. A 17.5 is probably close to a 35t in wheel speed, some run the 3,300kv Tekin pro4 also, that's insane power.

Every stock part in the drivetrain will fail under brushless power, the axle housings, tranny input and rear shafts being the exceptions. I recommend beef tubes in front also and forget plastic wheels.

ESC, motor and good Lipo's, brushless setups are amp hungry. Motor and ESC must be sensored and if you run water the motor needs to be able to get to the sensor board for waterproofing. The silver Novak motors can't easily be waterproofed so are best to avoid, also the sensor harness can't be replaced on those and they are pretty easy to mess up.

seems like a lot more work than its worth, would i just be better to get a holmes esc, cant remember the model number, but its waterproof and can run i think up to a 6 cell, and from there just running 3 or 4 cells for the added power? or will that cause things to break as well?

i was reading through here that a bec will allow me to run a 3 cell on a stock esc, any thoughts on that setup for gaining a bit more wheel speed?

thanks for the reply

3s on the stock ESC with a CC BEC is a great stepping stone. For under $50 your gonna get a 50% increase in speed and power. You might start wearing out a few parts, upgrade as you go and have fun.

On rigs that I am mostly crawling with, I stick with brushed motors. If the speeds get over 10mph I switch to brushless. A tekin 13.5 and MMP is in my Wraith and SCX10 right now, running 3s and cheat mode.

Remember breaking parts also has a lot to do with the DRIVER. Driver throttle or trigger control has a lot to do with what can and will break. I have run brushless in my Wraith for a while 21.5t and 10.5t on 2s 3s and 4s and didn't break my driveshaft until i landed wrong on the rear in full throttle on 4s. Then again parts last differently in every vehicle.

Like has been said before for more of a crawler brushed is it and HH BR-XL is the ESC. Now you also could run a Mamba Max Pro ESC and if you decide against brushed you can run brushless. Thats one of the great points of the MMP ESC. It will run Brushed or Brushless and censored or censorless. I have 2 MMP's and 1 BR-XL and love them both.

Some great info thanks guys. I've got upgraded driveshafts already and cv's aswell. I give any rock a few tries and then give her nuts to get over. I'm thinking brxl is in my near future, I waterproofed.the stock esc and it crapped out, then it fixed itself, then fixed itself then broke again so I was using a buddies for a bit till I found one, but brxl is in my future for sure, I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about them.

Has anyone here tried running dual motors? I've seen the plates to mount two motors. Figure you could do dual 27t motors and make great torque and still have more than enough power to spin the tires when I get in to mud

Cheat mode is a timing advance mode for sensored motors. It is in the advanced tab I think, when programming the MMP. With normal timing I was going about 10mph. With full cheat mode enabled with 50 degrees advance it was going 20mph.

I was running a brushless setup in my wraith a 3300 kv venom motor esc combo and on 3s it will pull wheelies on command! Brushless can be good if you don't like to service and rebuild motors however, they be more costly to replace than a brushed motor!

Too much power is just right!

I've got a buddy who's right in to all of this stuff with the electronics and such .I'll mention what you said to him and see if he can do it for me. I'm all for more power. Don't even mind draining the battery a bit faster. I generally bring six 2 cell 4400 batteries 4 nimh as backups and a 3 cell if something is on the verge of dieing and I feel like assisting it. Thanks for all the help

Is the mmp watwrproof? I only ask because we play around a lot of water and I like to occasionally treat mine like a submarine. lol

Not waterproofed. Can be or ran in a sealed box. I think John does waterproofing of others ESC's now also.

If the MMP is going into a SCX10 I would just put the esc in a balloon and zip tie the end packed with some marine grease or liquid electrical tape. Just remember to disconnect the fan, or it will burn up the board. You can also put it in a Radio Shack project box then sealed it with liquid electrical tape and be good to go.

With the new firmware The fan will shut off as soon as you apply squeeze the trigger! It will then only come on just before thermal shutdown! At least that what castlle told me!
