Default Rear Axle Questions

Hey everyone, I'm having a difficult time trouble-shooting a binding issue on a rear axle I'm putting together. First, the parts list:
  • scx10 housing, new
  • axial hd bevel gears, 43/13
  • axial hd locker
  • stock width beef tubes
  • axial aluminum lockouts
  • axial stock hexes and axle shafts
Now, the issue. The gears mesh seems to be too tight and difficult to turn the axle by hand at the hex.

Since first assembling the axle and pulling it back apart, I have shaved the inside of the axle tube so the lockouts slide on. It is still a bit tight, but not much tighter than the aluminum chubs when I assembled the front axle. In addition, I removed the paper gasket that goes between the ring gear and locker.

Still, the mesh is too tight for my liking. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Jon D.

Are your lockouts on straight? I would imagine that would cause some binding.

Not sure. The play is fine until I slide the lockouts on. Maybe I'll try it w/o the beef tubes...

If you don't seat the inside pinion shaft bearing fully, it pushes the pinion into the ring gear, causing binding.

Does the 43/13 use a different size bearing on the gear side of the pinion?

I dremeled a bit more where the beef tubes seat on the end of the axle tubes. It is a little tight still, but no where near what it was. We'll see how it holds up.
