I can tell you you definitely need a 3 pos switch....i have seen people install one in a radio that didn't originally have one ....you could get a wireless one too the come with a separate little key fob and take the radio out of the equation all together as well

Like I mentioned, the DX3R has 2pos, 3pos, and others available for each channel, yours is probably just set in one of the others.

What about a dx3e since it's a lot cheaper? They any good?

There is a Futaba 4pl for sale in the classifieds for a decent price. Sooner or later your going to want that 4th channel, trust me.
