| Johnny's Axial SCX-10 G6 (Re)Build
With my SCX-10II XJ getting the majority of the trail miles lately*, I thought it would be a good time to freshen up the ol' G6. This guy has logged more trail miles with me than any other rig, so it deserves a little love. Here's how it looked on it's last run before the refresh: Axial SCX-10 G6 by johnny anguish, on Flickr Nothing crazy compared to some build, but relatively stout. It's a G6 kit with a Tekin 35t and a CC Sidewinder 3 providing the power. Savox waterproof servo (Axial horn). ScalerFab bumpers and sliders. Proline scaler shocks. Hardened gears in the transmission. HD axle gears (OD front). Axial universals in the front. HeyOK and Axial light controllers. Whew. You forget what goes into these things over time. Oh, and it usually rides on ProLine Swamper XLs mounted to GMade steelies, but I do love the look of the Trepadors (mounted to RC4WD wagon wheels), so they get run as well. For the first round of refresh upgrades, I decided on SSD D60 axles. They just look so nice. I'm testing out the aluminum tape "fix" for the bearings. I put Incision spools in there. I also added Axial knuckles, C hubs and lockouts. I changed out the axle gearing to be standard in the front and UD in the rear. I wanted a little more umph without breaking the bank, so in went a HH CrawlMaster Expert 13T. I had a pair of RC4WD Hazard wheels that I won in an RPP charity auction, so I ordered up some Mad Beasts and Deuces Wild foams. Lastly, I replaced one of the King Kong tow shackles I lost out on the trail. All that work and I only took one picture during the process: Axial SCX-10 G6 (Re)Build by johnny anguish, on Flickr Oh, well. Once I get everything cleaned up I took it out for a few pre-run photos: Axial SCX-10 G6 (Re)Build by johnny anguish, on Flickr Axial SCX-10 G6 (Re)Build by johnny anguish, on Flickr Axial SCX-10 G6 (Re)Build by johnny anguish, on Flickr More to come... *And my continued, perplexing infatuation with my CC-01 FJ Cruiser. |

Been running this thing out on the trails and on the crawler course at my LHS. I'm not overly impressed with the Mad Beasts yet. I'll give them a little more time to break in, but I'll likely end up back witht he Swamper XLs for most runs. I'll check on bearings in the SSD axles after a couple more runs. So far, so good... I've been piling up the trail miles on this rig and so far the foil tape bearing band-aid is holding up well. Time will tell... It's just flat out fun. The latest refresh has given it a new lease on life. The Mad Beast are OK. Not crazy about the wheels. I've got some changes up my sleeve. Before the rebuild, this rig primarily rode around on Swamper XLs. I love the look of the Mad Beasts (although not necessarily on the Hazard wheels), but I was missing the performance of the Swampers. Time to get 'em back on there. I wanted a change from the GMade steelies they were mounted on, so I picked up some black SSD wheels. I also switched from CI Deuces Wild to Lil' Novas. I'm happy again. How wide are those ssd wheels you have the tsl xl tires mounted on. Do they pull the beads in a lot or are they as wide as the tread.

I really like my Gear head with rock beasts XL's. I have the wide set up on the front and narrow in the rear.

Gearhead wheels are usually a solid choice. I love the size and look of the Mad Beasts, but the Hazard wheels weren't doing it for me. These I dig. I'll probably still run the Swampers a bunch, but it's nice to have options.

Here are a few more photos of the Mad Beast/Gearhead combo. Why? Because it's snowing and I don't have any hot chocolate. I was getting in a decent number of trails miles this winter as the weather has been holding up. I had my fair share of frigid mornings out there, but the trails had remained clear with only a couple of inches of snow here and there. Party's over. We just got slammed with back to back storms. It's probably going to be a while before the trails are passable for a 1.9 scaler. I guess I'll just have to do some tinkering in the meantime. I did manage to get out for a few miles just as the first of the storms was blowing in. I tossed the Swampers back on the G6 and had a little snowy fun. It gave me a chance to try out some new LURC cover-style scale hubs. I dig 'em. Tons. Hooray for much higher than normal temperatures! Due to the fact that we've inexplicably* been in the 50s and 60s pretty regularly over the past week or so, a whole lot of that snow has melted. The main trails are packed down with solid snow (or in some spots, entirely clear), but the secondary trails** still have several inches of wet, rutted, tire-packing snow. I was able to get the 2.2 rigs out on the trails a few days ago. This morning, the G6 made it out for a short outing. Success! A couple more days and I may even be able to get the Scrap Dingo out for a run. Back out there again this morning. The record-breaking warm weather we're having in New England right now is something else. The 2 feet of snow on the trails is gone in all but a few places in less than 2 weeks. What's left are some nice little streams to play in and lots and lots of dog poop. Really nice rig. Have you broke much on it during it's time on the trails? What was the reason going changing the OD in the front to an UD in the rear set up? I'd have thought the end result was the same. |

As for the switch to UD in the rear, it's essentially the same effect, but with the added benefit of reducing torque twist. | |

I had always planned on getting a winch for my SCX-10II Cherokee. I hemmed and hawed and debated between cheapos and servo winches. I finally decided to pick up one of the RC4WD Warn winches. I've seen some pictures of them mounted to the stock Cherokee bumper and they look pretty good. I figured that once it burned out I could use it as a dummy and run a servo winch behind it. I went out to my LHS with my son and picked up a winch.* He was anxious to get home and get it mounted. Oh. What's that? There are 2 different size RC4WD Warn winches? The one I have is too wide to fit in the recessed space on the SCX-10II bumper? I see. Well, I've already got it open and there's this HeyOK controller... That, my friends, is how my G6 ended up with a winch. Axial SCX-10 Jeep Wrangler G6 by johnny anguish, on Flickr * And a Bomber kit. My son said we should get it. He can be a real charmer when he wants to be. |
