| New shocks - too stiff. Need advice
Hi guys, I'm building a custom scx10 and decided to try out some different shocks. They are 105mm length piggybacks that use 2x 12x40 mm springs each. Turns out the softer springs that come with the shocks are still way too stiff. Rig will weigh no more than a rtr scx10. Can someone give me some advice on some soft springs on this size I can try out? Thanks Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk Last edited by OvrKll; 03-07-2017 at 01:46 AM. |

To be clear, the shocks are 10mm diameter, the springs are 12x40 mm. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk |

I'd guess no one wants to tell you that you bought crap shocks or they're too lazy to do the searching you could be doing. I dunno.

Tons of spring options, I'd have gone with some 90-95mm eye to eye length shocks though. If you let those go to full droop, you might bind and break driveshafts, not good for sidehilling either. Edit: metal on metal shock (or linkage rods) ball ends usually get sloppy real quick, plastic ends with steel pivot balls is better. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...hock+springs&* |

Are those 10 MM ID or OD ? I've never used shocks with that small of coil diameter. and so really have no helpful answer. Maybe the Losi mini-T springs are nearer to that diameter ? Tho' I read those are 11.5" ID Or maybe look at other springs available for say 1/16 - 1/18th scaled mini RC kits ? I just measured my RedCat Everest16 factory coil springs... and those are nearer to 12mm - 13mm OD (roughly measured) So where did you purchase those skinny diameter shocks from ? They don't offer additional coil spring options ? Sorry... my search of coil springs in that diameter nets me zero. Maybe wade thru' google chit ? https://www.google.com/search?q=Coil...coil+springs&* Last edited by TacoCrawler; 03-10-2017 at 04:02 PM. |

I know there are good name brands on the market, I have a set of proline scalers on my other rig. But that does not mean lesser branded/known products cannot work well with some tuning made to them. Part of the fun for me in this hobby is tinkering and looking for alternative solutions outside the buy and bolt on traditional way of upgrading. And at the cheap price these cost I figured it's worth a try. I can tell you that the finish on these shocks is quite good. If I need to change/modify some pistons or o-rings or springs to make them work properly so be it. Does not bother me at all. In the end I learn something. The fun for many of us is in the journey not the trowimg money at everything and having a 1000+ bucks rig. To each his own Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

Thanks for the feedback, will keep an eye on binding. These are 2 spring shocks, my plan is to use one super soft spring for droop and one of the firmer stock ones for the last part of the compression to help on sidehilling. I wanted narrow shocks to have clearance as I will be running big 2.2 tires , cvd's and narrow hubs. On full lock the tires barely touch the shocks. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

Appreciate you took the time to look and try to help. I bought these at Rcmart, brand is Xtraspeed. They look very much like rc4wd king shocks (just found that rc4wd makes spring kits for their shocks, will probably try those) Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

Hi I was wondering how much stroke those shocks have. I have a set of GTR's off my slash and they have 3/4 inch of stroke. They are a high speed shock for a stadium truck but I have them and want to use them if I can. Same as you. Why not try it instead of just following the lead dog. I am just wondering what the travel is on other shocks. |

When I got my internal spring shocks the lightest springs were still a little stiff for my liking so I bolted them to the truck and put weight on top and let them set for couple weeks fully compressed and definitely helped mine out ALOT. Might work with yours as well

I have some similar (without the ext resevior) shocks on my scx. Axial makes tons of different length and stiffness springs that will work on them. Iirc the Axial springs are 12.5 mm, but will work. I currently use AX31444 in mine. It's a single spring setup, but I like how it works. Very soft springs.

Green slime on every seal, and some balloon strips covering the shafts. Worked a treat with no leaks. Added Some Pen Springs on the outside of the shock hoses for protection. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

If you want some softer springs, try the ones I am using. They are super soft, which isn't for everyone I know but I like how they work.
