Re: Wraith Beginners Guide

Hi Harley, what is the differnce between a crawlmaster 13T and a torque master 27T? I've sent an email to Holmes Hobbies, but they seem to be thru tough times.

Would the 13T crawlmaster be able to run with the stock esc? I think the limit is 19T for the Axial AE-3.

Thanks!

The Crawlmaster is a 5 slot armature as opposed to the typical 3 slot. So the resistance of the 13t Crawlmaster is comparable to a standard 27t motor. It is fine to run with a stock ESC.

Thanks Harley!

But what is the performance difference between the 2? Why would somebody get a crawlmaster 13T versus a torquemaster 27T? What does the 5 slots give you over a 3 slot? Thanks for the help?

Thanks Harley, but performance wise, what is the difference between a 13T crawlmaster and a 27T torquemaster?

On Holmes website, they suggest both for the wraith, but why would I choose one over the other? What does the 5 slots give me versus the 3 slots?

Thanks for your help!

Harley thanks so much for this thread and all of the help you give us RC fans.

I do have one question about these diagrams as I am about to wire up my rig with a Savox 1270 servo and the new Warn winch. Can I run the servo from the Rx (Spektrum 300 Rx) like in the first diagram and run a second BEC (or simply run wires to the winch controller from the BEC like in the second one)? I would like to run both at 7.4v from a 2S lipo.
Thanks again!

Note: None of these diagrams show the stock lighting controller. It only requires a 4-6v power supply so any open port will work or you can direct wire it off your BEC (as long as you are running appropriate voltage) or your ESC's red RX wire.

Standard stock setup WITH BEC.
Note that you need to pull the red wire out of the plug from the ESC so that you do not burn up the internal BEC in the ESC. Just pull it back and tape it, you will need to be able to reconnect it to program it via a Castle link or Hotwire if your ESC is compatible with that (stock ESC can use a Castle link).

A typical 2 servo system.

You can split the BEC output if you like or you can plug them both into the RX if there is room (which I am assuming there is not).

Re: Wraith Beginners Guide

It is a 3 channel Spektrum 300 Rx. So just run the BEC into the Rx like the top image and run both servo and winch controller from the Rx? Will I get 7.4V to each?

Thanks!

searched and no good finding...... so whats a good replacement brushed motor for the wraith, and whats the over all difference with the 20 and 27 turn? speed/torque?

This is going to sound stupid, but surely the stock servo has enough power to turn the front wheels lock to lock? It only hits full lock when the trucks moving but works fine when you pick it up off the ground?

i had issues with mine about ten minutes into my first day with it. the biggest issue is a little plastic bushing on the main output shaft. there is a way to replace it with a bearing. Harley probably has the exact size in one of these threads.

Thinking about upgrading to either of these their quite cheap and cant be any worse than stock!

Thanks for all of this great information Harley!

I used the two bearings from and old HobbyKing servo that the gears crapped out on me and put it into stock servo before I even used it then waterproofed it

Re: Wraith Beginners Guide

Harley, thanks for the guide and putting up with all the Noob questions.

I have a Wraith kit and a few questions to follow.

I have an 1/8 scale buggy and a Summit, so the Wraith is my 'semi-scaler', I am not a competition crawler, nor will I be racing at the track, somewhere in between on par with the Summit.

Keeping in mind that the Wraith is a money pit, how does a Noob make smart investments. I am halfway through the build and need to start ordering.

1. Tires - the kit tires are the R35 compound right? Should I glue up the kit wheels or replace with beadlocks. I guess the better question is what will wear out first - wheels or tires?

2. Links - the kit comes with aluminum lowers and plastic uppers. I know the steering links (tie rod and drag link) need to be replaced. Do I buy aluminum uppers and steering links, bite the bullet and do the Vanquish titanium 10 piece upgrade, or just replace them over time as needed.

3. Servo - thinking Savox 1256TG, any other suggestions?

4. Motor / ESC - I know this has been addressed in the other forums. I like the idea of having an esc that I can run brushed or brushless. Therefore I eliminated the BRXL and the Tekin FX-R. I was looking at the Tekin RS Gen2 with the redline 13.5t but If I go the Mamba Max Pro route, I can get a ROC 412 (3100kv) for the same price as the 13.5t. I could also do MMP and a 35T brushed. I assume I also need to run a BEC (for the Savox 1256tg)

water - not intentionally but I will waterproof for the inadvertent dunk

5. Battery: 2S or 3S

6. Tranny: presumably with the brushless setup I need to go with a Robinson G3 56T slipper (that's the correct gearing for the 13.5 and 412 right). Do I need to do that right away, or run it till it breaks and replace.

7. Chubs, knuckles, lockouts; I was going to go with the Vanquish Stage 1 kit. Do you know if the stage 1 kit has Ackerman arms or standard. I presume that this also affects my choice if I go with the Vanquish 10 piece suspension links. Presumable you need to run Ackerman arms and ackerman tie rod. What do you recommend.

8. Chassis mount servo: The Vanquish chassis mount claims that you can run standard links without the panhard. Do you recommend this? What exactly does the panhard do? As I understand it, you need to remove one of the upper links to run the panhard (does vanquish sell a 9 piece link set).

9. Shocks: plastic kit shocks currently installed, lower mounts flipped. I have the kit supplied axial super soft springs. I was going to upgrade to axial aluminum bodies, but after you replace the body, preload collars, caps, etc. You could replace them with Pro-Line Powerstrokes. I think you used the slash front shocks to give you a lower stance, right? Do you still keep the lower mounts flipped? Do I need to get a Droop Kit? Do you run front or rear slash shocks with a Droop kit?

Thanks again, your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Woah woah there! So many questions....

I would HIGHLY suggest you view the budget build series put together by none other then the man Harley himself....
[Unless you're ready to drop another $1k-1.2K on that wraith today...)

See here, episode one.

Thanks gbean, I'm on episode 12 and have learned a lot. It would be great if they were stickied to the first page of this thread. Sorry for the barrage of questions. I was going through my shopping list when I wrote it.
