| Steering problems, please help!
Ok, I'm building an axial wraith i have finished it and I put the aluminum steering tie rods on it and it has a bunch of over steer, anyone have a solution? or have the same problem? it wants to turn left or right but still goes forward I even added lots of weight to the front tires to cancel that along with keeping the front end down while crawling. I am new to this and I just need some input, thanks! heres a couple pictures of my project and a link that shows our outdoor crawl HonkerCrawl Photos by shopteacher | Photobucket |

because of the locked diffs, these trucks do not have great steering. You could add Overdrive gears in the front and Underdrive gears in the rear, that will greatly increase turning radius. |

Getting some decent tires would help too...

| Re: Steering problems, please help! Does this only apply to crawling? I always wondered why a person would have different gears front and rear? I thought that was bad? Maybe it is bad if you only want speed?

He meant decrease. Adding od/ud gears greatly reduces the turning radius. Because the front wheels are spinning faster, it will pull itself around using the slower moving rear wheels as a kind of pivot point. Probably one of the best mods you can do to a non-dig shafty. It also greatly improves climbing ability. It does cause issues if you want to go fast though. |

Thanks for clearing this up Duuuuuuuude. It helps me understand much better. I want speed in my one Wraith and crawl ability in the other. So this is very useful info!! |

so would the gears or rear steer be the best way to go? he has the radio/receiver that would allow rear steer. it is a matter of knuckles, servo, etc. i did rear steer on my ax10 and it was amazing. mode 1:full rear/ mode2: 20% rear |

If you plan to comp at some point, no rear steer, it is not allowed. If you are just goofing off and having fun, go rear steer. The gears are helpful for more than turning though... |

Hi On the note of steering Is anyone using this from CKRC ? https://www.ckrccrawlers.com/ckrcs-s...d9e311ef2cf88d It looks like it would help out alot in tight spots crawling, especially with a higher torque servo Thanks Scott |

You could make that at home in about 15 minutes and $4 worth of parts, minus the servo horn.

That's a poor steering setup for various reasons. Harder on servos: gears, cases and horns. Unequal steering geometry side to side due to servo horn not being centered on axle which is undesireable for a few reasons. Last but not least the pictures they show on the site: my tie rod and drag link setup with Vanquish knuckles and Axial universals can turn that sharply also, when not moving........Axial universals will bind up at quite a bit less of an angle than shown when rotating (moving). Universals of whatever sort will always be the limiting factor in that case as none that I have seen can rotate at angles greater than a tie rod/drag link setup provides, so there's really only disadvantages to a suicide switch setup IMHO

There is a reason nobody really uses that kind of steering setup. BV just explained why. | |

What bugs me even more are the claims of improved Ackerman. Ackerman angle is built into the steering arm radius and angle in relation to kingpin inclination, nothing to do with tie rod length, and is designed to provide toe out on turns based on the principal that the inside tire turns in a smaller arc than the outside tire. Correct angle helps greatly in low speed maneuvers (tight turns) by helping the tires to follow a different arc around a common pivot point . All I can see with the suicide setup is tie rod length changing as the servo travels upward in its arc from it's neutral (lowest) point and effectively getting shorter as the two steering links triangulate, causing toe in on turns, the opposite of what is desirable.

| Re: Steering problems, please help! Yeah, do it in your crawler Wraith, Clay. As mentioned, it helps with climbing plus with a few blips of the throttle in a turn you can pull the frontend around faster. A poor man's dig.
