Default axle diff backlash

I just got a new set of gears for the front axle because the old ones were really peaked.

So whats the acceptable range for backlash? same for pinion depth?

They're pretty tight and smooth now without shims but in a few weeks to a month when the start to develop some slop/play.
Would they benefit from shimming or will the just wear quicker. These are from a ps wraith, these are still the straight cut teeth instead of the helical gears Im planning the get for the winter rebuild and other goodies. but for now the weather is awesome, my wife and son both enjoy a nice trail ride as much as I do. So I got this one back up and running quickly.

tia for any insight into the gear mesh/backlash.
I can set them up in my sleep one a 1:1 all night ling. but those cases are alu or cast iron. Tm trying not to warp this case or eat a new diff set.

Most people are set-it-and-forget-it types it seems

I am all OCD about tolerences. If you set up 1:1 diffs than the same rules apply for setting backlash and pinion depth. You basically want the smallest amount of play you can get.

I use HPI washers size 5x8x.2 and 10x12x.1 to shim the pinion and carrier bearings.

I've found that the stock "sintered" gears usually benefit from a washer under the pinion head, but so far the 5 sets of HD gears I've installed are right on without any pinion shims.

I'll bolt the ring gear to the spool, install the bearings and drop it in the axle case and see if the carrier bearings can move side to side in their moldings in the case. I'll then remove the carrier bearings and add enough washers to take the play out.

Be careful, because the ball bearings don't tolerate much lateral preload, unlike 1:1 tapered roller bearings.

I've found that an HPI Blitz "rear axle spacer" fits perfectly between the pinion bearings, acting as a solid spacer of sorts. Then I'll add washers before installing the driveshaft to take all the in/out play out of the pinion gear.

Axial's tolerances are kinda off from my experience. Some carries take several washers to take the slop out, others only need one. Same goes for the driveshaft side of the pinion gears.

I have .4mm in one axle and .6mm in the other.
