I'm new to RC as well and I also just bought a Wraith. I am looking to modify mines to increase reliability on the stock motor. From my research, an excellent starting point would be an 87/18 (spur/pinion) ratio setup.

Some quick maths on gear ratios:
Stock 80/20 = 4.0 ratio
Suggested 87/18 = 4.8 ratio
For crawling, choose a higher ratio, e.g. 87/16 = 5.4

I personally really like the stock 4.0 ratio, I like the speed and it off roads reasonable enough for me. The problem is the stock 20T motor won't last long. I bought an 87T spur and two pinions (18T and 16T) to experiment with. Of course, higher ratios = lower top speed = more low end torque. Research setting gear mesh! There are videos on youtube and many forums on it. This is important for long term gear reliability and strength.

Regarding gears, pitch basically refers to the size of the gear teeth. Lower the number, larger the teeth. Larger teeth = stronger gear (but nosier). Make sure you match this! The stock 48 pitch could work, just get the mesh correct..

GET A BEC! It will increase reliability also.. Take a watch, easy stuff!

Chances are you might damage the plastic spur, or more than likely, damage is already done.. Inspect the teeth carefully, but I'm sure the gears are not meshing properly and that is why your motor is over heating.

Use the 18T 48P pinion instead

Are you high lmao , first of all it's a 17t and it's not 32p lol

One of the links you posted was for a 16t 32p pinion, the other 2 links were for 48p gearing...

I fixed my problems
there were two that I found
1. I warped the spur gear trying to drill a hole in the right spot to mount it.
then after that was replaced i had to get a better gear mesh.

i ran my wraith for about 40 minutes today and the motor was warm but not hot. seems like I got it worked out
Thanks for everyone's help!

My first paint job ever! Payed $2.79 for the LED kit just had to wire them up to a 9v connector and that's it! super low budge lighting! plus for that same 2.79 i got enough to do all my cars
