You can only shim he pinion in towards the ring gear. It should feel like the gears are making good contact but not binding. Use Traxxas TRA1985 shims

I put my shims between the putter pinion bearing and the mip shaft to keep the pinion from moving in. I'm guessing that was wrong?

| Re: Question about shimming HD gears Only if it's binding the bearings, if they still roll free and smooth you're fine. You want your gears and bearings smooth. "Notchy" or rough is bad, unless by notchy you're referring to a little backlash. A little backlash in the gears or end-play on the pinion is okay, it's better than tight and/or binding bearings and gears.

| Re: Question about shimming HD gears
I've been putting a 5x11x5 ceramic bearing on the outside (driveshaft side) of the housing on all my axle builds recently (6 to be exact) and it seems to be doing the trick. I can't take credit for this, someone else posted this in one of the pinion bearing/bushing threads and I liked the idea so I gave it a try. All 6 have had zero notchiness and just the slightest bit of lash in either direction of rotation and they spin smooth as butter. I'll be sticking with this method. It's worked on stock AR60s, the new SSD D60 axles, and VP Curries with the same results. HTH

Shims between the bearing and MIP, usually takes 2 or 3, I use tamiya shims. Trying to avoid this. Still happens, but it takes a lot longer. | |

I put shims behind the outer bearing also. Just need enough shim to take up the in and out movement. |

I've shimmed the space between the mip end and the outer bearing. So far so good. The last set of bearings that were not shimmed wallowed themselves out but I caught it before it ate the ring and pinion.
