Question XR10 upgraded rims - what did you buy?

I'm hemming and hawing on my purchases... pretty sure I want to do the VP knuckles which means rim upgrades needed... and I know I want to load up the front rims with weights... but I can't decide what to get... DH Comp 2s look nice... the SLW V4s and SLW V4 respuns look nice too...

What did everyone else buy? Did you go all 4 rims the same or 2 & 2? (which I've seen a couple people do)

I like the V4's the respuns look really nice but I don't it all depends on personal preference. I prefer having the same wheels on all 4 sides. I've driven vehicles with the SLW and the DH Comp 2s I prefer the SLW but....

What exactly is the difference between the SLW V4 and SLW V4 respun? Is it only the color of circular part of the rim - silver vs black?

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the "respun" just means that they Re-spin the wheel in the cutting machine after it has been finished and anodized in order to cut back through the anodizing and create the silver 'highlight' on top of the given original wheel color, to make it more "purdy"!

I ran DNA assisians, then VP DHII's, and know I'm running VP SLW V4's.

You could also just narrow 2 of your stock wheels to use on the front and save yourself $150. Of course not many people want to go that route, saving money doesn't look as nice

I have a set of the new DLUX wheels with clear faces and they look awsome. They work with VP hubs for adjustable width and he has a weight setup for them too.

Narrowing stock wheels

Narrowing stock XR-10 wheels

I did this. After 3 months one of the centers striped out. Now I'm running V2 SLW(4).

If you want the rear as wide as the front you can do this. With stock wheels.

Hands down for price and versatility Mayhem Evo wheels are the only choice!!!! There are so many different offsets you can create and you get ALL 3 hub sizes with your purchase. The craftsmanship is top notch and if you haven't given these a look, you really should,,,,,you would really think twice about the buying VP wheels!!

I also got a look at the new DLUX wheels this weekend at a comp in Omaha,,,,a very interesting design and defiantly worth a look, but for me,,,,there is no other choice then the Mayhem Evo wheels!!

Speaking of wheels, does anyone want a set of all black SLW V1's 1.35 wide? I'm wanting 1" wide ones now. I jumped on these because they were a good deal but now I kind of regret not waiting for skinnier ones. Of course, if anyone is willing to trade, I'd be down for that first

Here is a quote from some in the know on the subject.

Quote:

The average / common comp tire width is 2" minimum.

.7" wheels stretch the tires around the foam onto a very narrow wheel. In doing so, it crowns / rounds the tire, making for a smaller contact patch. That smaller contact patch reduces side hill stability. The stretched tire also squishes the foams which makes the tire / truck bouncy from the kinetic energy of the all the foam being stuffed inside.

If the wheel is the base or platform, and the inner foam in the next layer, a wider base will give the foam a better platform to work from. With a .7" wheel, you are basically making a rolling wedge. The tire is wide going down to a point at the wheel. How is that stable? Especially when compared to a rover or sedona mounted on a 1.25" wheel which has a very square profile and a flat and wide contact patch? The tires retain the desired / designed shape, the foams are not over compressed and they perform very predictably.

With the new foam system, every foam uses the same inner density but in different widths and heights. All the adjustment now will be from the outer foams and tuning rings.

I had a meeting with VP about this very issue. .7" wheels do not work well and I'm not going to focus anytime on them. Until a manufacturer makes a narrow tire to go with a narrow wheel, I'm following Axial's lead on 1.25" width bead locks and 2" width tires.

This goes for scalers also. 1" width 1.9 bead locks is what the new dual stage foam system is based around. Same for the 2.2 wheels. Wider wheels will start being more common as our hobby moves forward. Manufacturers are listening and know the bigger and heavier scalers need wider wheels.
