Default RichMTB01's Axial Yeti Kit - Round 2

Well, just got my Yeti kit in and contemplating which way to go with it. I have so many left over parts from the RTR build, this thing can go so many directions! I love all the included upgrades with this kit and the addition of the method wheels and Falken tires is great!

I should have an unboxing edited and posted to The RCNetwork on YouTube by Monday. Here's a few pics of the box and upgrade items:

Stay tuned!

Well, here's the unboxing video of the kit! I know not everyone's cup of jack.....

I go over all the differences between the RTR parts and the kits and show off the new wheels, tires and upgrades!

I started the Yeti kit build and so far it's going great! Very nice to see this being built from a kit versus tearing down a pre-built RTR from my other Yeti

Here's a few pics:

Nice to see Bag A! Instructions seems to be well laid out, however a similar hodge podge bag system for all plastic parts.

Machines HD bevel gears!!

The front diff went together nice! If you watched Harley's live build, I fell for the same trick of the 20000 cst diff fluid!

Now time for the rear diff. I decided to add some extra upgrades left over from my RTR build.

The Vanquish floating locker for the wraith axle was perfect

The diff cover is nice and sturdy with an "ARB" look

The rear lock outs and shock links went on nicely and included all the hardware

The shock mounts delete the lock nut from the stock set up with a threaded exit.

Rich do you think building a yeti to run off 2s is a good idea, or build it for 3s? Don't have any 3s batteries anymore, Sold them all off because I don't run anything on 3s. I currently run a Hobbywing 120 esc with a Tenshock SC411 4000kv in my SCT410. However I just ordered a Tekin RX8 Gen2 for that. So my plan was to run that with my Tekno for now. Then when the Yeti kit is released put the Hobbywing/Tenshock combo in the yeti (same setup ran great in my exo) and just go with a different motor in my Tekno like The Pro4 HD, so I can just stick to 2s on everything and I wouldn't have to buy a 3s. Yay or Nay. I mean I have time because the kit hasn't been released so I can always change my plans. Also since your building the Kit version what upgrades would you recommend for that. I want to start buying parts now for it so when I get it I can just install them as I build. it will be my go every where rig (including the track just for practice sessions for fun) as I don't run my Tekno unless its at the track.

Running the yeti on 2 cell would be just fine if you match the kv on the motor. There is a misconception that running 3 cell 3500kv and higher is the fastest or best but it's not always the most efficient. Example: running a tekin 4300kv HD motor on 2cell is just as fast as a 3300kv HD on 3 cell. Roar is the reason people run 2 cell 4300 and up KV. If they ever change the rules people would run 3cell and 3300 KV because it is more efficient and easier on electronics.

If I had an unlimited budget I would go with the 3300 kv HD/RX8 combo and a 2cell size case 3 cell SMC 4300 lipo battery.

Since I'm ballin on a budget on my yeti build, I whent with the viper copperhead R esc/4500kv sensorless combo ($120.00)on 60c 2 cell battery. This is my first none tekin combo, but am optimistic it will work just fine for rock racing/bashing kind of driving. In my opinion, the yeti is not a precision, super tuned exotic machine nore is it driven in a controlled manicured clay track setting to justify a full race esc/motor combo. Trust me, i have 5 other race cars and all have tekin systems but at this point in time my current selection I think will work just fine!

Hey Kaos,

Just like the previous reply said, 2s is all relative to the KV motor that you put in it. If I were pairing a 2s system in the Yeti, I would probably plan on a 4000kv ish motor. The 3s systems are more efficient and will have a bit better heat management than a 2s system though (just watch the gearing)

As for upgrades you would need out of the box from the Kit.........

Crawler Innovations foams
Vanquish Ti upper rear links
MIP rear driveshaft
Vanquish/STRC steering rack (not the posts)
Decent Aluminum servo horn

There are some unknowns: the plastic method beadlocks. I plan to run them with the Falkens and the CI foams. The "Icon" shocks appear to be the same as the RTR's just with machined Pistons.

That's really it. You may find additional items down the line, but it's all in driving style and how hard you beat on it!

I started bag B tonight on the kit build. Lots of cool upgrades were included in this bag!

Universals. Nice!

Steel steering posts with bearings.

Anodized aluminum turnbuckles.

Of course, additional upgrades found their way on the kit build! Had this new STRC aluminum steering rack laying around the studio:

I did lock out the saver with a perfectly sized bearing to take of the spring space.
