I read they did it to use the fatter tires and get full steering lock to lock.

maybe someone can help me find a pic, I've searched high and low on the webz without any success. It was a black and white pic of a '60's Gasser, it was a 'perfect' pic of the entire bottom end of the engine blowing apart, you could see the crank and some rods along w/ chunks of the engine block being exploded all over the place. The view was from the front of the car looking from the left front fender, you could even see the drivers eyes wide open, sort of like this:
