| Weird predicament
The company I support has merged with a much larger company. The larger company is keeping this building and closing several small offices and consolidating here. The new company is cleaning house on IT, I already know I am gone in March. Here is the weird part... They are interviewing for my position this week and have me setting up the video conferences with the candidate and management at corporate headquarters in Madison WI. After that interview the candidate goes to HR here. HR is asking me to participate in the interviews with the technical questions to test knowledge. Should I tell them to pound sand? They are going to lay me off because I am "old blood" but want me to help them find my replacement. Opinions please. Last edited by DickyT; 12-29-2010 at 10:26 AM. |

Depends on how much you want to help out. Could this job offer a good referral for a new job? Then you could help a little. If you don't wanna help too much, you could just make a list of some technical things to look for. Just depends on what you wanna do after March and what how comfortable you feel helping them out. If it doesn't feel right helping them and they won't be a benefit to you in the future, blow em off or do a few small favors for them. That's all I got. Good luck. |

I would want to tell them to pound sand and quite. It's a tough call though since jobs are hard to find right now. I hate corprate and big business. If you stick it out until March and get laid off you can collect unemployment until you find something else. If you quite you can't (at least thats how it is here). Good luck Dicky Im sorry to hear that this is happening. |

The new company will offer no referrals, they do not know us they say. They are laying off all the people who could give me a good referral. I recommended to the HR recruiter that the candidates configure their own video conferences too as an initial test and was told I could be let go right now for insubordination.... They want to do nothing to help me, but expect me to help them replace me. I won't quit, I am staying until march for my severance and ability to collect unemployment. I just feel it is wrong for them to ask this of me. |

Stick it out with them til March or start the un-employment paperwork asap. Just remember, your future employer could ask about this job and how it ended. If you ain't worried about that tell em to pound sand.

| Not going to happen. Severance is 1 weeks pay for every year of service. I have been here 6 years. I guess I'll just have to play their shitty game. edit: changed month to year... I wish it was month.... Last edited by DickyT; 12-29-2010 at 11:37 AM. |

You could always go "office space" on them . . . but seriously, sorry to hear it. It is a total load, but sometimes that's what life hands us. |

I would ask your previous boss for referrals. I would do what they ask if you wish to continue to receive your paycheck. I have been in situations like that in the past (I worked for a locum company)...it is weird, but you'll get over it.

You can't let emotion take over, and shoot yourself in the foot. It sucks, just make sure everything is in order (in writing) so they can't give you the short end of the stick when it comes to the severance ect.

To be laid off means they don't have work for your position, and when such work returns they are supposed to bring you back. If they are hiring for your position they obviously have the work. Are you going to apply for the position? You might as well put in an app, it'd make them think twice. You setup the conference, you make up the questions, you sit on the panel, and you have an interview. |

Jason has a good point... He beat me to the punch. Nevertheless, I say, stick it out, let them lay you off, file for unemployment, collect your severance, and make sure you tell unemplyment what happened. The unemployment office wont like having to cough up money they dont have to be paying. If everything works out, you could end up with your severance package, and your job back. which would work out great for you... Good luck, and im sorry to hear about your troubles brother.
