Thumbs up Speed Limiters - The Wave Is Coming . . . Oh No!

A recent article indicates in Europe, there is an effort to either coax or require by law that auto manufacturers limit the top speed of their cars

I believe Volvo already indicated they will cap speed to 112 mph soon

Could this diabolical nightmare possibly ever darken our roadways, our way of life?

Let's hope this sort of thing only happens after I die

What do y'all think?

i owned a 91 Nissan 240sx that was electronically limited to 112. there was a way around it then, and there will be ways around other attempts. im not worried.

Lease companies Like Lily and Ryder already do this on heavy trucks. They are usually governed at 65-75 mph.

I'm not for this "nanny" feature. However, in all honesty, I see no need to travel at 100 mph plus in my daily travels. And, the few I do see on the highway going that fast are the ones that shouldn't even have a license or a car.

Semi trucks are already mandated to a max of 83mph here in the US. My truck flat runs out of gear at 83 so I technically abide by it.

Most new cars are limited to 96-110ish anyway.

Semi truck crashes are not pretty, so capping them is a good thing.

I think most auto manufacturers already do this. My '05 sunfire is capped at 110, which is also the same speed the speedo tops out at. The reason is so a reckless, gear-headed twit of a teenager, like me in high school, doesn't push the car until something blows. because when something gives out at those speeds, you better start praying for your life. However, I had a '98 le sabre, though that would go until something blew or until you chickened out and lifted your foot.

Japan has had speed limiters for years on its domestic vehicles, 180 km/h (112 mph).

My raptor will hit 114 mph before giving up the ghost. But it gets to it fast

Same with my Hemi Ram, it's never shut down but I only went around 110ish once. But yeah it gets there real quick.

140+ in my 98 camaro (tuned, including speed limiter delete) was downtright terrifying. nose started to lift thanks to that genius idea of bottom-feed radiator. i haven't gone triple digits since.

When I was in AIT me and my buddy took my 350z nismo for s spin on 64 one day. We went 146 and then immediately slowed down to 75 then pulled off the side of the highway.. thought we lost a tire from the sound the inner wheel well rain guard said see ya later..

I thought the car was never tuned or messed with. Maybe older nissans don't come with limiters?

Anyways.. if its got a stick and aftermarket EFI.. I will be okay. even though I don't see past 85 on the highway anymore. the way the roads are paved up here.. I don't see a point going past 90. On a well maintained track... that's a different story.

130+ in the dark one night in my 95 LT-1 6 Spd Z28 back in the 90s, that was fast enough for me, I think back and thank god a deer didn't jump out in front of me. The stupid crap I did in my 20s

American vehicles have had the same thing for decades. My old S10 (1996) was limited to 94mph. Given the miles I put on the road these days for work, and the skills and IQ of the average driver, I'm wondering if 45mph is too fast for most.

oh yeah that run in my camaro was in the dark too.
also hit 124+ in my 89 civic, and about the same with my 86 corolla GTS. yes, they can get there but you could brew a cup of joe while its getting there lol
and that 1991 240sx all you had to do was jumper the wire on the ECU for the 5th gear sensor. 120+ with stock engine.

and come to think of it.. ALL of those runs were at night haha

as for the Nismo Z i think those are considered "track ready" and speed limiter is up around 150-ish. and yes i hate inner fender liners.

i think our 20's are a point in our lives to test if we are worthy to live past them lol

I just inherited my Dad's mint 93 40th Anniversary edition Corvette and I doubt it will ever see 80 mph lol, a lot of good memories in that car, I drove that car in a Corvette caravan to Bowling Green in 1999 there was a group of us traveling at 110 mph for miles, felt like 65, cops didn't even bother with us I guess we were big bucks to the area because all they were pulling over were minivans and sedans lol, all you could see was Corvettes for miles.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened by now. Our freedom in the US is attacked and reduced every year.

As was said, a lot of cars are already electronically limited. My Chevy S10 was limited to 100MPH. I remember cruising home from college on the Turnpike topped out when a dude in a BMW was following me. I moved to the other lane when it was clear. He gave me thumbs up as I moved over and passed me like I was sitting still. My motorcycle does not have a limiter. It runs out of steam around 140MPH.

Motorcycles have been electronically limited since 1999. Japanese and European motorcycle manufacturers agreed to limit top speed to 186 MPH for fear of getting banned in the no fun zone (Europe). This happened after the debut of the incredible Suzuki Hayabusa.

I'm all for freedom so I'm 100% against top speed limiters

The good thing is that people are usually intelligent enough to hack ECMs and get rid of the top speed limiters.

oddly ive never been a top speed guy. always more into acceleration.
that being said ive been researching ways to join the 200mph club legally for several years now. alot more involved than one would ever think, cages, fire supression, work up threw mph ranks. etc. you cant just show up to an event with a fast car and go balls out. :(

Speed limited programming is not new. My 07 Silverado 2500 HD Duramax's stock ECM was limited to 90mph. It was never a problem since I never drive the truck that fast in the first place.
