You need an analog stick for proportional throttle. The X-Box controller is on/off.

I did alot of searching last night myself, one site said it's been released as freeware now and gave a link. I won't post it here incase that's actually false. I had to see what all the fuss is about.  |

Oh, ad if you look at the URL on the page above where you download 1nsane, you will see it comes from Codemasters FTP.

If you look at the link on the site you found... The link goes to Codemasters FTP. Yes its free now. If it wasn't they would take it off their own FTP don't you think? The patch probably wouldn't work either if they weren't letting it go. I used to have a link to where Codemasters themselves said it was free, but that page has been dead for years.

There is a patch you need to dl, don't need the code that way. Just make sure you get the patch2 http://www.insaneheat.com/Patches/ |
