Im proud of anything someone does in the armed forces. My brother is stationed in Fairbanks Alaska right now, but is due to go over to Iraq soon. And when it comes to snipers, there is only one I look up to and that is Carlos Hafcok.
I guess we have kinda changed John Deeres thread, but their all right bolt is the way to go. And if you get one, optics make a great deal in accuracy. Leupold makes my .17 very deadly on varmits. And makes my 300 Win Mag. deadly on just about anything.

They would not let me due to the fact I had surgery on my left foot. Nothing wrong at all now just a scar, and also have a slight bit of Asthma. Other than nothings wrong. I am only 20 myself just for ****s and giggles. I am not sure if the barrel is a floating barrel or not. But I am for sure getting a bolt action.

not trying to wrinkle any feathers here, but .5 moa @ 800 meters, isn't that a bit under 4" , so would be roughly 4.75-5.25 @ 1000. I thought 1 moa was around .9something tenths of an inch @ 100 meters. Just trying to clarify if i am incorrect.

Yep, that settles it. It proves that you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

"unleashed the potential of these rifles with accuracy improving to about .5 MOA. The Max Effective range of the M40A1 is listed at 800 meters by a lot of sources"

You interpreted this to mean that at 800 meters (875 yards), the gun is good for a .5" grouping. When, in the real world, all it says is that the gun is good for a .5 MOA, which means that at 100 yards, under ideal nirvana conditions, the gun is good for a (+/-) .5" grouping at 100 yards...................which means, at 1000 yards, the gun is good for a (+/-) 5" grouping.

The only thing that article showed was that the M40A1 was accurate to about a .5 MOA...................which does absolutely nothing to help your argument that you are your fellow snipers consistently shoot at a 1/4"-1/2" grouping at 1000 yards.

There is about as much chance of you actually being a trained USMC sniper as there is that your rig has "175* of front articulation" as you have also claimed.

Not to get in on this dispute, but the normal human head is what 6" to 7" wide and 9" to 10" tall so why argue about little measuments when all you have to do is constantly hit say a paper plate at a 1000 yrds. With the right windage you can easily terminate any person. A group of friends and me shoot .300 win mags and are pleased with baseball size groups at 600 yrds.Shooting at 1000 yrds has a heap of variables and a lot of factors with the 7.62 round. I will say this, if someone is a Marine and has been thru sniper school they are a force to recken with. My brother on the other hand is in the Army and is issued a SAW so accuracy is not a concern for him. I would have to say i would much rather have one shot to end it quick rather than the spay of his weapon. John Deere sorry for wreckin your thread. Good luck with the bolt gun and if you have the chance, prairie dogs are a lot of fun with the .17

No one is arguing about how accurate a shot needs to be from any distance. From 1000 yards, a shot that hits the broad side of a barn is impressive to me. For the most part, I am a handgun shooter (with just the AK sitting around for an intruder and lots of fun in the woods), so I am use to measuring accuracy at 25 yards..........................1000 yards doesn't much enter into my daily life for accuracy sake. I just aim to place my .40 CZ75B rounds close to the middle of the target at a mere 25 yards.

The dispute is about lying, and spreading bullsh1t. A claim has been made, and a few are interested in whether that claim can be backed up.

You obviously didn't have anything useful to add to this, did you?

BTW, John Deere, I'm sure you won't be disappointed with a nice bolt gun. There's something about the mechanical feeling of it that makes pretty gratifying, particularly when you nail your target.

Robb now your talking, I enjoy shooting my handgun even more than the rifles. We shoot IPSC on every first sunday of the month and absolutely have a ball. I shoot a slightly modified Colt Combat Elite in .45ACP and another Colt in .38 super but I have always been a diehard 1911 fan.
John Deere what kind of shooting are you plan on doing when you get your .17 ? We even have used the .17 on coyotes and had really good results.

I just saw this little beauty at academy today. I am REALLY thinking about it. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Order_...gnum/917V.aspx

It is a Marlin bolt-action .17 HMR, has a bull (thick) barrel, a 4-shot mag., no sights, just a grooved receiver, built-in swivel studs, wood stock, blued barrel (stainless stands out too much, anyway), all for $208! A steal IMO. What do you guys have to say about that rifle?
