I've been thinking of picking up a 99-01 XJ as a second vehicle. What is the largest tire size I could put on one without lifting it?

I got a 88 XJ limited needs new paint, AC isnt working (rebuild it? donno), but runs good, AW4, Renix of course, 4.0. For onroad I def say manual, but for offroad Auto is the way to go, stronger and less to worry about, and more to worry about where your getting yourslef into. In terms of drivetrain... The 91 and later has the "high output" 4.0 I6. That's when they did away with the Renix system and did some head and intake modifications. Don't go older than 87, cause an 86 is actually NOT a Jeep...it's an AMC and they usually came with the 207 t-case, which is hard to find aftermarket support for, plus 87 was the first year for the inline 6 and the only choice for engines before this was a POS V6 and an inline 4. The best combo in terms of aftermarket support and longevity would have to be the 4.0 I6, AW4 auto, and either the 231 or 242 t-case (231 has a bit better aftermarket). Another plus to the 91 and later models, in 92 they did away with the closed cooling system. This was a system that had no real radiator cap to speak of and instead had a pressure cap on a plastic bottle. If the pressure is not perfect or you have even a small leak, it won't perform correctly. The closed system IS however easily swapped over to the more conventional open system with very little work. Stay away from the newer one's with the low pinion front axle, and for that matter...any of them that have a vacuum disconnect front axle housing. Not that they don't work, just more headache down the road. Plus, the newer models need the SYE kit with even very small lifts. And since everyone showed off theirs......here's my rock rig. My 87XJ, the black one with 36" SX's, had the junk 5 Speed in it when I bought it. Had 90k miles, wheeled it like it was stolen for a year with 32's AND 36's before the tranny went. Picked up a ax10 5 speed for $300 and had it installed in one weekend. The only thing different is the mount to the cross member and the slave cylinder has to be adapted, or the entire slave cylinder system replaced. $$$ Edit, I forgot the transfercase is a smaller spline count on the Old tranny. The new ax10 is a 23 spline. So theres money in getting a new t case... It has been the strongest tranny I have had in ANY truck so far. I really would recommend something 91 or newer. They are not that expensive, come with an AX10, OBDII for better reliability, not to mention a little MORE power. XJ overheatting problems can be a real pain. There's alot of motor, not much radiator. The older XJ's have a sealed cooling system. no over flow. No radiator cap. It can be a real pain to get all the air out of the system as well. Newer, I think 93?? have an actual radiator cap and an overflow. A much better setup. My first trip to Moab, 03' I had the old style cooling system in my 87'. Ran cool 1700 miles there, all over town, just fine. When I got out on the trail and had to go slow, Overheat every time. The next year I went back with the completely new cooling system from a later model, I cranked the AC on the trail the whole two weeks and NEVER even thought about overheating. So remember, you can take an old rig and add newer parts, Or you can just get one with them on it. Either way. You gotta pay to play! Last edited by WheelChair; 08-19-2007 at 01:53 PM. |

I'd rather have my 87 Cherokee than a brand new Chevy. |

My Dad used to have an '88 Cherokee (basic with 4.0l/AW4/242) that he used as a work truck, when he totaled it on an icey bridge it had 210k and he thought it could have gone another 40k before it needed a rebuild. He currently has a '90 Laredo that he put about 170k on after buying with 100k. This one is also a 4.0l/AW4/242 truck and he has had to replace one t-case and one D35 both at over 200k, but this truck still runs well enough that it'll break tires loose even though it's up around 281k! For what he did with it, those trucks were more reliable than GM and Ford products that he used through work.

if you pull out that airbox and use an adapter from rusty's you realy free up allot of room. to me it looks like that engine has been washed, could be thats it was just kept clean.
