What is the wire coming off the esc that attaches to the heat sink? Do I need it?

I took the heat sink off and took it out of the plastic casing because I needed it to be smaller and there was no place to mount that piece thats circled so I I just kept it plugged in and mounted it to the side of the chassis. It seems to be working well and it's about the same size as a sidewinder now.

If it's attached to the heat sink it may be for checking temps.
