Those can probably be chalked up to some type of user error, like a hair of a wire crossing into another post or battery wires backward or something else that was overlooked. The FXR is one of the best esc's on the market and a favorite with a huge majority of serious drivers. I use two of them on my XR10, with absolutely no problems. They perform flawlessly. Just slap the thing in there, don't be in a hurry; make sure all your connections are clean and proper and let the good times roll!

Extra heat when soldering can often be reduced/managed by using a heat sink. You can make one by using an all metal alligator clip with wire attached - or - if I'm soldering a connector, like a Deans, I'll use one of these and connect it to the connector being soldered to draw some heat away from the other components that could be damaged by the heat:
