Default Hitec 7980 heat issue

So i just got a 7980 for my XR10. I wanted to connect my BEC directly to the servo. This is what i did.
1. Cut my servo wires to length and re-pinned with male pins.

2. Removed the orange wire from the connector.

3. Cut the BEC wires to length and re-pinned with female pins.

4. With the cut off of the BEC connector (saved the stock pins and connector) made a jumper connection using the orange wire.

5. Made a single wire connector with the previously cut yellow servo wire. At the cut end re-pinned the wire with a female pin.

6. Installed the female end of the yellow wire into the BEC/servo connector.

7. Connected the yellow male end to a connector that will go to the Rx.

Here is a diagram of what it looks like:

This allows me to adjust the BEC without having to disconnect anything and if in the future i get a new servo, i can just connect right up to the BEC.

The issue that i am having is that yesterday i went to test some geometry changes. After a single pack the servo was really hot to the touch. Is this normal that the 7980 gets really hot?
I have the BEC set to 7.2v. I did notice that when i put the Robitronics servo horn on (the longer one) it was having trouble getting full throw when turning left. The revo/jato drag link would make contact with the servo case. I currently have the servo flipped so that the spline is closest to the wheel. Wondering if there is something that i am missing that would cause the servo to get so hot. I have a 7950 that i ran for a while and it never got hot. Granted it was never connected directly to the BEC.

Any thoughts?

When you flipped the servo, did you recheck the steering EPA's? A servo bind can generate a lot of heat fast.

Yeah. I checked the EPA's. The only thing i could think of is getting a servo programmer.

My 7980 barely gets warm on 8.4, sounds like something is binding.

Ok, i will have to check and see if anything is binding.

But per the diagram, there wouldn't be any issues would there?

It seems pretty straight forward.

i don't have a 7980 but my 7955 get's hot! After 3 packs the aluminum heat sink will about burn your finger if you touch it. I would think it's fairly normal unless it's smoking hot!

Well my 7950 never got that hot even when the BEC was at 7.6v. It would be warm to the touch but not super hot like the 7980 is getting.

I have the same problem. Mine is wired direct to the bec at 7.4, no binding. Mine gets hot as hell and any more than one 800mah pack it starts to glitch, like heat builds up or something. Im gonna run it till it takes a shit send it in for warranty then sell it for a loss. Then ill buy the Futaba that I should have gotten to begin with...

I haven't had any heat issues with mine on my xr 10. My bec isn't connected to the servo tho and the voltage haven't been upped yet, so I think it's at 5v. Mine sometimes gets warm but never ever hot. Something must be wrong with your setup I am guessing.
