| Finally making changes... FXR Questions
Since I began crawling, I've been running NiMh packs. I bought an FXR last year, got it set-up, and have been loving it since. I bought and received 4 LiPo batteries yesterday. I have them all wired up and ready to go. Everything is in check except my ESC. Since I'll be making the change from NiMh to LiPo, what will I need to change on the ESC? I have a Hotwire so changes will be pretty easy. I did search... alot, but came up empty handed. I also read the instruction manual, but couldn't make heads or tails of it so I gave up. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated, as I'm ready to run my truck! Thanks -Greg |

You need to activate the LVC (low voltage cutoff) so that the truck will stop when the LIPO's are discharged to their safe level. I recommend setting the LVC to 3.2-3.4v PER CELL for 3s it would be 9.6-10.2v you do the math if you are not using 3s.

That sounds easy enough, anything else?

So basically I have a few more questions. I figure that while I have a thread up, it's a decent time. I don't personally know how to take a screenshot, but looking at other's of the hotwire screen, I've noticed a couple things. First of all, Current Limit. Anyone care to explain? I'm not sure what this is, or what it should be set at... Then there's voltage cutoff. I can set it at 4 different levels. I'll be running 3S batteries, what should it be set at? Throttle and Brake profiles: what are these, and what should they be set at? And lastly, what about reverse type? I've seen it set at a bunch of different things... The manual doesn't get into what these things mean, just how to change em |

Screenshot.....Windows based systems usually mean you hit "Fn" & "prt scn" buttong at the same time. Then open "paint", and past the image there. I save as a ".png" instead of a "bmp" since it's equal quality & a LOT smaller file. I don't worry about current limit. Voltage cutoff, suggestions given in an earlier post. Throttle & brake profiles.....crappy compared to a Castle ESC, but basically: -Linear means whatever you do with the throttle on the TX, the ESC does. -The other "curves" change what the ESC does relative to throttle trigger movement. Reverse type, "crawler reverse" or "instant reverse". |

| Re: Finally making changes... FXR Questions I don't see where in the software (Hotwire) I'm able to set the LVC to anything but a value of 1,2,3, or 4. For whatever reason, my brain is unable to compute "3.2-3.4v per cell" to 1,2,3, or 4... Thank you for the screenshot info, it doesn't sound too hard, and should make things a bit easier to explain |

You are sorta correct, Castle ESC's allow a voltage/cell limit, the FX-R has ranges. Re-read the manual, voltage cutoff "3" is for 3S LiPO. Just above that shows the throttle curves. |

Run the voltage cutoff slider up to custom. Then you can set the total voltage cutoff. I run 6.6v for 2s and 9.9v for 3s. Can go a little lower but that allows for some margin of error before hurting the cells. Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2 |

Also, set your throttle minimum to zero. (If it's an option in the FX-R - can't remember and my SCX10 is down at the shop. It makes a big difference on the RS and RX8 for ultra slow crawling. Default is 10 which makes it kind of jumpy.) Current Limit is what Castle would call punch control. Beneficial in racing - not so much in crawling unless you're using really low C rating batteries. Limits the amount of current the motor is allowed to use under hard acceleration. Last edited by tocsin; 08-17-2012 at 01:25 AM. |
