i would not be willing to test this, but that would be amazing if a gopro could be dunked in there and still have the connectors work (and the image quality not affected), all the features of the case, without the bulk!

Interesting read.
It is an interesting read, but still short on hard facts. The abrasion method was specified only by brand name, but never by specific model of test equipment or parameters. (Taber makes many variants of their abrasion tester, with widely differing capabilities.) Also, stating that the product is "200 times more effective" than competing products, all of which appear to be manufactured by the same company that manufactures the product under scrutiny, save for one data point referred to as "literature" doesn't tell us much.

Anyway, this is getting away from the bottom line, which is one of us testing the stuff on out own gear and posting results. I look forward to it.

Ok, I found an old ESC (Losi Xcelerin 1/18th brushless sensored) and popped it out of the case. I sprayed the two parts as the instructions say (Part1...one light coat, wait 30 mins, second coat......wait 30...Part 2...one light coat, wait 2 mins, second coat). Then I waited about 30 mins for it to dry (the minimum according to the instructions). Here are a few pics:

First, a picture of a portion of the instructions:

Hooked up to a battery showing that the ESC works:

A picture of the ESC before coating:

A picture after coating with the two step process and allowing to dry:

Hooked up to a battery again.....it still works:

And now into some water:

And here it is about half in and out of the water:

It really does just roll right off!

The instructions say it takes 12 hours to completely cure and I think that's probably a good idea...but it is dry and waterproof within 30 minutes. I think we are still going to need to put some shrink wrap around the electronics.

Cool.

How does it compare to corrosion x Jeremy?

I am guessing that is more of a CYA statement.

i'll have to try that urethane conformal.

i use this stuff on all my elec boards after getting tired of the mess of dielectric grease. i apply anywhere from 5 to 8 coats and have never had any water issues.

Tech Spray 2108-12S: TechSpray Turbo-Coat Acrylic Conformal Coating, 12-oz

conformal is the shit. i'm amazed that people suggest corrosion-x or dielectric when a much better and cleaner option is available.

Well, I have never dunked any part of the electronics coated in CorrosionX into a cup of water and put power to it, but so far, this stuff differs in that it dries completely, just like a clear coat of paint.

Also, like it says, it forms a coating of air around the coating, which you can actually see in some of my pictures above.

I think you posted the same stuff basicly, just in an aerosol. The acrylic is great becaue it hardens and is very very durable. I like the brush on personally because I like to be able to build it up in tight spots in only 2 coats, but either works good.

Conformal coating is what JRH recommended to me so that's what I chose. It's actually made for coating electronics unlike the neverwet, and it hardens for less mess and longer lasting protection than Corrosion-X.

Here's a decent review on the stuff: Jeremy, do you find the stuff flaking off like noted in this link?

from the review article.

"NeverWet's packaging explicitly tells you never to put the stuff on electronics. But in the promotional video, they use NeverWet on electronics. So we put NeverWet on electronics."

I had not noticed that, but to tell the truth, since I sprayed that ESC, it has been sitting on my work bench in my garage.

I can check it out when I get home today though...

Cool. That was kind of a bummer to see that it makes it white and then to have them say it started flaking/wiping off. I guess if it were put in shrink wrap afterwards, it wouldn't be much of an issue.

Yeah, those people were putting it on some flexible material and then handling it quite a bit. Also, I am not sure if they waited for it to "cure" or not. That stuff dries pretty quick, but, IIRC, the package says it cures in 24hrs. And yeah, I'd still shrink the boards...

Yeah, 24 hours for a full cure. I think I'll give this a whirl and see for myself. Thanks for putting that test together.

On a fiberglass RC Boat is sloughed of the gel coat side...but stuck to the inside. It seems to me the surface condition plays a role in its adhesion. Also I would try building layers similar to painting an RC body.
