| Smoked stock and HH crawlmaster expert.
Mostly stock axial bomber with stock gearing...smoked the stock motor. Got a new HH crawlmaster expert 13t and after first run it works intermittently, makes some serious electrical crackling noise, and is smoking. Emailed holmes to see what the deal is, because I literally used it once. The kid likes to pound the accelerator, but I didn't think the motors would burn out?!

It's a big heavy truck that's probably geared to high to start with. No 540 brushed motor will survive.

That is SERIOUSLY overgeared. I personally could easily get the stock 540 rebuildable 35T motor really hot on 2S in warm weather with about 5-10 minutes mixed driving. A proper 13T 540 size motor would cook in about 10 minutes I'd say in all honesty. I tried the SCX10 540 27T and it go so hot it just wasn't funny. A 21T or lower would have been a hoot but wouldn't have lasted a pack. Did you check the temps after 5 minutes? I have a Bomber and SCX10 on 3S with dirt cheap brushed Titan 550 21T motors that work amazingly well in the cooler weather. Everything stays happy for all out thrashing or crawling. In the hot weather I'd be checking temps every 5 minutes to get a baseline on temps for the activity. Mostly crawling really slow TBH as going fast with this gearing and with 3 cells seems fine. My son is a maniac on the gas but everything stays super cool. With the Hobbywing WP80 for $40 it's a gem of a setup on 3S. |

Stock 64/12 gearing on 3S. Did not check temps. Didn't think I needed to since stock motor isn't much different that the crawlmaster 13T

the stock gear ratio on a bomber is 64/12 or 5.33 its not over geared for a stock 35t motor but a crawlmaster 13t can and will cook if its ran as a basher for long...especially on 3s.. I would have went with the crawlmaster 16t/11t or a 35t torquemaster and an 11t pinion for a 5.8 ratio..if I was running 3s.

Putting in another motor won't solve that. I'd gear as low as possible and if still smoking then will need a higher turn motor that draws less amps. Last edited by Hardcoretam; 05-14-2017 at 09:57 AM.

So is my brand new crawlmaster toast and I just threw $50 down the toilet?

Since this is my kids bomber and he clearly likes to drive like an a-hole ;) I will just get him that holmes 21T $20 motor and a 10t pinion if I can't fix the crawlmaster.

It can be rebuilt....send it back to holmes and if is a manufacturing defect he will cover that, if not he can rebuild if fairly cheaply...

Time for both of you guys to learn why it cooked. A simple temp gun will save replacing motors. Gearing and binding are not hard to change Hang up and Drive |

Just buy a Titan 550 21T for $18 or whatever they go for at the LHS. My stock geared 12/64 Bomber laps up the abuse even with my 7yo at the wheel on 3S. The harder you drive the happier it is. Plenty of power and very cheap to replace. |

Hardcoretam is correct, the Holmes Crawlmaster 13t approximately equals a standard 540 can 27t, the reason is that the CrawlMaster series are 5-pole motors, not 3-pole as is the norm.

Contacted Holmes...will see what they say. But looking st his fees it would be $30 to rebuild plus shipping back and forth. Almost cost of a new one....

If it smoked, you likely cooked the epoxy that covers the windings. I'd get this before the Traxxas piece of crap Titan. TrailMaster Sport 550 - TrailMaster Series - Brushed Motors - Motors |

I am assuming burnt epoxy wouldn't qualify as a rebuild?

Just buy a new rotor from holmes along with a set of brushes and pop them in yourself, i have done this on many occasions and it was cheap...

Out of curiosity and not my best idea. I took it apart to see what it looked like. All that black stuff that looks like liquid is actually harde and solid. So this looks like a $50 paper weight I think. Plus in taking it apart I broke what I assume to be a brush. Lesson learned I guess. |

The can is probably still usable, clean it out with some motor cleaner, then you can get a new armature and brushes and run it on YOUR rig, lol. That armature is definitely a rolling paper weight. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk |
