Default Forgot to disconnect the power to receiver

I connected my BEC to power my receiver. Problem is I forgot to remove the power wire from the speed brand new FXR. What fries in this situation? The black wire going from the FXR to the receiver smoked. I disconnected the red wire and it still smokes. I removed the plug from the receiver and no smoke. How do I test the receiver and speed control to find the short? Thanks for any help you may be able to render.

It could have been a failure from "mirror-image insertion", meaning the output of the ESC's regulator was held higher than it was set to for longer than allowable. Some regs don't have any protection against that. The FXR reg probably shorted to ground, allowing every bit of current the BEC could muster to short to ground, and which must have been 10A+. The ground wire ended up having a little bit more resistance than the red, so it heated from with the current.

To test for a short you'd set a multimeter to Ohms and check between the 5v pins to the ground pins on the receiver and the FXR (separately). You should not read anything, or maybe something well above 10k Ohms. 0.4 or less and it's internally shorting to ground.

Ultimately if the FXR doesn't power itself with just a battery, it's BEC is shot. The only way to power it externally is to remove the internal reg parts & fish a wire from another BEC inside.
