not from my understanding of counter or back emf; however, I think that is how a drag brake is operated is by reading the back emf of the motor. Be a good question for John R Holmes

John Holmes once explained it beautifully, and the differences in drag brakes in another post. I myself don't remember and wouldn't be able to find it if my life depended on it, so he's the guy to ask like as stated before Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk |

I know this isn't the question but when JRH was asked about the difference between the Holmes Hold drag brake and passive drag brake he mentioned that Holmes Hold consumes power while Passive drag brakes puts power back (regenerative). Another thread go's into more detail and JRH comments in here too How does Drag Brake work? What's the principle? Last edited by HumboldtEF; 08-17-2018 at 06:48 PM. |

Drag brake is simply the motor recharging the battery. The strength is limited by the ohmic resistance of the system, so a bigger battery, motor, and esc will have higher drag.

The question I wonder is on a brushless system when your brake is holding you on a hill, are you draining battery? Seem like it would have to be

If it's "Holmes hold" that is holding it back, it would be. I'm really considering Holmes escs now that my wraith is heavier with larger tires, the normal drag brake isn't enough anymore Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk |

| Re: drag brake = counter emf ?? True drag brake, only if it increases conductivity. Silver brushes will have slightly more, but I don’t know if most people or setups would notice. Sliding friction, on the other hand— a larger brush (like p94) or heavier spring will cause more low speed drag force and noticeably increase drag at the lowest Rpms. Many competitors have been swapping to my XXX springs lately. Seems to be a “feel” that is preferable. |
