Default Transmitter/receiver compatibility (Vaterra/Spektrum)

I'm not new to RC, but it has been a few years and I am new to crawling...

I'm looking at a "RTR" crawlers (I use quotes because each brand has a different idea of what RTR is), one of which is the Vaterra Ascender, which lists a Spektrum DSMR/DSM2 Transmitter as being required. I realize that is because it comes with a Spektrum receiver and servo, but I already have several older Traxxas (TQ 2 & 3) and Futaba transmitters/receivers and would like to use one of them instead...

Is there any reason I wouldn't be able to use my radio stuff, or is there something about the recommended gear that is crawler specific?
