Default Burned up a brand new brushed motor

I need helpful Information:

I purchased a reedy radon 2 16t - 5 slot armature motor for my scx10 2 rtr. I am using 3s and I ran it out of the truck for 3 mins at half throttle to break it in. I installed it with the stock 13t pinion and it was running really good. I only drove it in the garage and wanted to see how the slow speed control of the motor was compared to the stock axial 35t, it was better. I set up a wood ramp and found the steepest angle I could go up. After that I was crawling over domestic objects when all of a sudden it started smoking really bad. I took the motor apart and the armature is burn to a crisp.
What did I do wrong?

If you were running the stock 56t spur, that would be a 3.5:1 ratio with the 16t pinion..waaaaaay to tall for a 5 pole brushed motor given how you ran it. Most new brushed motors now need no break in and if you do its not the way you did it. Get a 10t pinion, new motor and no break in and you will be fine. Shoot for a pinion/ spur ratio between 5.0:1 and 6.5:1...

I'm sorry, I meant 13 tooth pinion

4.3 is still too tall for a 5 pole brushed motor...i would still drop to a 10t pinion, also could be just a junk motor...

I also burned up one of those reedy motors in my wraith 1.9 it ran nice for about 5 minutes then smoked and seized up.

Contact the manufacturer for a replacement. Tell them what you did. Let us know how there customer service is.

Putting a heavy load like climbing a steep carpet on stock gearing is creates a decent amount of heat in the motors. It's a good idea to monitor the Temps on a new install. But the motor should have handled that.

If you're manufacturing motors that can't handle stock gear ratios, you're going to be making motors that burn up a lot. On some cars though even HH recommends a lower gear than stock. Not on the scx10ii though.

I think using only the spur/pinion ratio is a mistake. It's the overall ratio that matters.

A recommended 5:1 pinion/spur ratio on an original SCX10 translates to 37.7:1 overall reduction.

A 4.3:1 pinion/spur on a SCX10II RTR gives you 42:1 overall reduction.

I'm gonna call them tomorrow and see what they say. I did check the website, the replacement brushes are out of stock and i don't see any armature at all.

If they don't replace it, and I'm assuming they won't, I guess I'll buy an armature from somewhere.

All I know is I run my 10's and 10.2's the way I stated and have never burned up a brushed motor since I started doing it that way. Burned up a few in the experimenting stage...
The spur and pinion were the only things changed running the stock trans and diff gearing

I just hung up a team associated rep and they said they are sending me a replacement. The guy I spoke with was unfamiliar with these newer motor offerings but said he would forward the info to the reedy guys. He also wants my old one back to check it out. I asked about my13t pinion and he said he was gonna find out more info but wanted to get a replacement shipped out right away. So I guess I can't complain.

You can still complain, it's just less justified now.

I would think that 13t pinion would be fine unless you have added a ton of weight to the truck. Remove the motor and roll the truck back and forth to make sure there is no binding in the driveline. If there is binding, you need to find out where it is and correct it. Setting the gear mesh too tight will also burn a motor up.

You can tell the pinion is too tight cause the sound it makes doubles.
