Default Plastic vs aluminum servo case (Savox)

Do you really need a full aluminum case? I’ve personally never broken the ears off of a plastic case. I’ve got a few servos in the 4-500oz weight class too. Maybe I just don’t push them that hard. Just wondering what the threshold is for the plastic mounts?. 600oz? It’s pretty much $40-$50 to jump up to full aluminum case in the savox line @450oz+. Is it worth it? Looking at the 1212 vs 2290 for the most part. I understand one is brushless and one is coreless.

If you are just crawling or running CMS, a plastic servo case will probably never be an issue. The few times I have wiped out a servo case, it has been on something fast with an axle mounted servo.

The case also acts as a heat sink to disappate extra heat.i have broken and cracked a few cases.

In our niche of the hobby, heat dissipation is really why you want an aluminum case.

I've never broken a servo case in my 30-ish years in the hobby.

As the torque of a servo goes up so does the strain on the case. Any servo putting out 500+ oz-in should have a fully aluminum case.

If you're crawling hard with a heavy rig heat build-up can definitely be an issue. That's probably the biggest driver for metal cases in this end of the hobby. But for 80% of folks that are just into trailing with some light crawling I don't see it being an issue.

I have seen a few people tear the ears off of plastic cases but that typically only happens on AMS set-ups and only after a massive tumble. In those situations a metal case probably would've just meant the damage was pushed upline and into the servo mount.

In all my servo failures, the case has never been the issue.
