Default Codyboy's IFS Portals Truck

At first I wasn't going to make a thread for my IFS truck, there are plenty already! Way back when I first ordered my IFS kit I mentioned that I may check into marrying SSD portals to the kit.
So this is what I came up with.

Now to show you how easy it was to do. Anyone with a drill or press can do it! Intersted???

I am interested... I was looking at the SSD portals for the UMG10, but curious how it works with the IFS. Is the width still the same? It looks much wider in your photo.

Good morning soze, 3/8 wider on each side. I think you could make adjustments with wheel offset and hubs. I will post up pics and how I did it in a little while.

More threads is better than fewer threads.

Very cool! Glad this worked out and can’t wait to see more of it. SSD Portal in the rear? Any thoughts on a body?

Also, mind if I share this on bookface?

Ernie, this is rad! Apparently I need to actually get on the forums and do some browsing once in a while. I'm missing all kinds of cool stuff.

I really like working with the SSD portals! Not sure everybody knows, but you can swap the two gears top to bottom so in this case I can swap them to get more overdrive if I want. I don't think I will go to portals in the rear, I already have two full portal trucks. It may look a little "creepy".

Hello Brian, are you getting snow in Bend yet? You need to make a trip over the hill to see what I do have going on in the shop!

I do it all the time, but I can blame mine on old age.

Ok, I want to check a few more things out before I showed you guys how I did it.

I started with a new builders chassis and the IFS kit. I already had the SSD front portal kit on hand.
Here is how it looked before I started.

So I pulled the assembled IFS kit off the truck so I could get to the diff. Because the portals have two gears they will change the rotation direction on the axle.
The cool thing with this kit is you can switch the rotation of the diff by flipping the ring gear! That takes care of the direction change!!!

With everything apart I stated with the dog bone drive axle and one of the portal gears. ( I used this same process when I built the offset front portals for my SSD Trail KIng) I move over to my vice and started filing flat spots on the hub end of the axle. Slow and steady and keep checking until the gear slides onto the axle.

Next I needed to figure out how to get the axle to play nice inside the portal housing. First thing I figured out was the axle threads were smaller than the 5mm ID hole in the bearing. This one took me a few hours to figure out, (remember I'm 70 and my thinker doesn't process as quickly as some of you young whippersnappers! Finally the light went on!!!

I threaded a nut onto a old rear axle shaft and off to the lathe. I know, most of you don't have a metal lathe. But you could achieve this with a drill or drill press and a file and or grinder.

Next was to figure how much I should cut off the axle/drive shaft.

Axle cut and bearing sleeve installed.

Now we are ready to see if everything fits with no problems.

Came up with a little binding on the mount for the lower arm. One nice thing is the SSD portal is alum so grinding in this area went well, lots of material to work with.

I used a permanent marker to cover the silver color.

And there you have a nice clean setup, I didn't have to change anything on the a-arms lengths.

And back to this photo.

If you have a problem making the bearing sleeve I sure you could convince Codyboy to help you out!!! Or I could do a bolt on kit for you!
There you go, have fun.
Ernie

Forgot to ask, how’s the steering and shock travel with this set up?

THIS. Although replies are slow at times, I have no doubt everyone appreciates the outside the box and can do thinking.

I know when I was new I had a hard time keeping up with what you were doing but as I learned more I continued to get more and more impressed with more than just the way the trucks looked. Please keep it up Ernie

No changes to travel and shock functions, everything is still very smooth!
I really hope that if any one out there doesn't understand what or how I'm doing something would ask for more info, and thank you for the kind words. It is always about passing it forward!
Ernie

Sway bar design.

I came up with an easy add on to a IFS rig.

This is a Dlux sway bar I've had for several years. Here is a updated version.
https://dluxfab.com/#!/Sway-Bar-Wrai...tegory=6232188

So I added some parts from one of my old goody box. along with Erik's kit and came up with this. And just a little note, I used the existing holes in the frame rails.

I started by adding a SSD Diamond axle kit, next I flipped over the link/shock mount, this helped in not having to stack the link, shock and connecting link all on the same mounting location. And no to binding on the shock!! Everything is tight but it is all free moving.

Everything clears on the body!

And tires and wheels fit fine.

Thanks for looking, and as always questions are welcome!
Ernie

Looks to me that you could use the mounts on the front of the diff case and run your piano wire out and bend to match the holes on the back side of the lower a-arm. Use link mounts and threaded material to attach wire to lower a-arm.
But I bet knowing your skills you already figured out that part out. We did it for years when we were racing carpet and dirt.

Yah, I was just curious if there was a bolt on option out there too.
