Default TSK's 3.99lb RD1 Berg

A few may wonder what the heck I'm doing starting a the in this sub-forum, but rob_b is building an XR so

Basically, XR guys love XR's & Berg guys bleed Berg, so I thought I'd try to find out if I have been missing out on something.

Quick run down of the prospective specs:

- RD1c chassis cut for me by CreationFab (you da man Chris)
- CDW'd axle tubes (full OD & gun drilled fromts, reduced OD & natrowed link mount rears) with a CF servo mount courtesy of krawlfreak (big thanks to rob_b)
- XR hybrids & Axlemasters (thanks 4xFord)
- Felsenfest delrin SCX shocks with CreationFab spring retainers
- FXR or Micro Sidewinder & a Punk
- 16t mini cobalts
- DLux "pull starter" & rear link mount, battery mount, poly pinion covers & faced motor mounts (Thanks Erik)

I still need to pick a servo and decide on wheels, Crawling Calvin has been working on some Ti face wheels for me, so I might use those.

On to the pics!

The RD1c started as a sketch I drew. I handed that over to Chris @ CreationFab and he cleaned it up a little. The "c" stands for "cabbed" as the original was a bodied chassis, and We later agreed that it needed a cab. And the term "bodiless" sounds played out Chris straight killed it. I still trip out at the fact that this 1/16" thick CF beauty is HANDMADE. If any one of you have a chassis design in mind, but don't have the means/time/skills necessary to make it happen, Chris is your guy.

To prove that my design is an "inspired" original, I decided it best to post a couple comparison pics

RD1 vs SA 3.5:

RD1 vs Chump RT:

2.4oz with SS hardware and aluminum bars

CDW'd tubes

Axle bits

I'm still waiting on some parts, and figure out links and stuff, so be please try to be patient, cause I know i'm not, lol

Lookin good Travis.

That chassis reminds me of your tuber you built for the xr.

Looking forward to seeing what axle you like better.

Nice start Travis. The rear upper link center hole looks dangerously close to the edge of the chassis in the fourth pic. If you take a big fall do you think it will hold up?

That will never work

Having almost every moa on the market(berg, xr, hr, clod) I can say you'll like the strength. But the thing I like better about the xr is parts availability and the plastic slides better. But the bullet proof-ness of built berg axles is really nice

Thanks Marc. Now that you mention it, the original cab I drew up was way more squared off like your Specual, but the slightly rounded cab design Chris fabled up fits much better.

Thanks. I hope things turn out well, as fas as the one link hole, there is only really one way to find out hopefully the double shear assembly saves it. Or I could just not use that hole

If you had anything to do with it, it probably wont

But I will agree, finding parts for this thing is a pricey bitch, and I do love my XR, but variety is the spice of life

Looks like a start. I'm still glad that you didn't end up getting the extra low CG servo mount setup

Yeah, I wish I would have caught that before I shipped it. I may have made new lower plates. My damn drill press has seen better days. Luckily my new Sherline Mill should be here within a week or so

Then CreationFab will be cookin with fire

I am really liking the look of that chassis. Glad I took the time in front of the TV with the woman to get it looking good for ya. That may be added to the CreationFab inventory before long. Got a local guy that wants to try it out.

Thanks For taking the time to turn these tubes for me. The extra low CG servo mount might have been the next big thing for Bergs though

Thanks Kieren. Besides the chassis, I think the rest will be "extra regular" for a Berg

Got a little mock up done last night since some DLux goodies showed up

DLux 4 link mounts and faced motor plates

Rear:

Front (Erik calls it the "short link style" but I like to call it "the pull starter" it's designed to help protect the servo/horn):

For links, I reused the ones Chaotic Crawlers made for my Chump RT. I did have to use Jatos on both ends of the rears o get them to Spanish the gap though. I also will have to switch to the XE bent rod ends on at least the chassis side of the fronts to prevent binding. Rear uppers measure at 4-5/8" eye to eye and the short uppers are gonna have to be a whopping 3-5/8" eye to eye Short link style is right!

Thanks guys

So I'm thinking grouping the pics together like this may help clean up the thread in the future? What do you guys think?

Also, after mounting up the servo as best i could, I thought this looked a little sketchy as it's an obvious potential hang up. But after looking at other builds, looks like it's not nearly as bad as some I've seen.

I'm thinking of making a thin delrin skid that double stikies to the bottom of the servo, and just curls up the front of the tube, to at least provide a smooth transition from tube to servop case. Is this something I should really concern myself with or should I just let it be?
