| FOFF: Why Not Nitro?
Ok, so I've watched some videos, and now I'm hooked. I am already thinking about what parts I need to build a nice foff in the future (after my crawler is built and tuned). Coming from a nitro backround, the question came to my mind as to why more people don't use nitro engines to power their foff rigs? I use to foff my nitro before it was called foff. I've even been told to f off a few times while running it. Any reason(s) for this? Yes nitro is loud, stinky and burns your eyes when running. But you can get great power to weight ratio with them, and you can run them all day without having to recharge your batteries. I would think nitro engines would work well due to the rpm range an foff rig seems to need to be successful.

price of nitro is more than a few packs of lipos plus the electric motors have quick rpm as the nitro or more plus all the torque right off the bat. all around electric motors do better, not saying nitros cant but electric will be easier and better

nitros engines are great, some motors are really really powerful ... but for the foff exigence ... i think that a good nitro setup vs. a good electric setup ... this last kill the first .... there are some electric combo (esc - motor - batteries) that are really really killer !! high rpm, high torque at low rpm, high allround performance ... and if is necessary, if you want to do some water skipping, waterproof. |

i had a tmaxx with a 2.8 big red 3.4hp motor.. while it was ok.. i was going to put paddles on it but then the noise.... the oil residue... my lack of being able to always keep it adjusted and running right... now im back on electric... and going to build a FOFF... im also doing what your doing.. starting to think what i need.. everyone told me to get my body first.. or know what body i want... the reason is then you can build the wheel base around it... my foff is going to be a beach foff / trail basher so paddles / trail tires im going to make my own frame... use a summit 2 speed trans brushless 6s system allthread links and WELCOME TO THE FOFF!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Nitro is old tech. Clutch shoes will never grab like a pinion and locked spur setup. Not to mention the instantaneous torque of electric. Internal combustion 2stroke engines require you're within a certain rpm power band determined by air intake, tuning, fuel, exhaust and etc. to put out decent torque. There's really no reason to run nitro anymore unless your aiming for that class or nostalgic reasons, there are more ticks in the con column of performance/runtime.

i would think it would be easier to clean sand out of an electric motor than to clean it out of an engine

I run nitro 1/8 buggy, but thats only because its the biggest class at the local track. Otherwise i would run electric hands down. Instant power, cleaner, quieter, cleaner chassis layouts(personal opinion), no pitman for mains, doesn't die if the turn marshal doesn't get to it fast enough, etc. A nitro foff would have a cool factor to it that electric just cant have, but the cons just don't seem to wieghout to me.

I think a high winding smaller displacement motor with an airplane fuel tank would make a ridiculous FOFF truck. Would be much more enjoyable than the instant torque of a brushless setup, IMO. Thanks for the idea, I may be stealing it.

I think something along those lines would be cool also. Just because it can be done. If I ever do it I will, of course, post pics. | |

Damn that thing is BADASS! That is sort of what I had in mind. Have you seen it in action?

| Re: FOFF: Why Not Nitro? IMO I would have a nitro FOFF as a second rig.Just for the "old school" feel, sound and look of it. Just think of it pulling up to the line revving. Smoke snorting out if the exhaust. The calm before the storm of the motor at idle. Then all hell breaks loose with sand spraying back, exhaust shooting out in a constant scream of "look at this shit" sound. I think it would be more of a challenge with the clutch engaging and disengaging as you throttle up and down while going up the track.Keeping it at a happy medium would be a challenge in itself.Because you wouldn't want it jerking from start to stop while trying to navigate the course. If I had a vote I'd say go for it. |

The more I think about it, the more I want to do it. I'm thinking something like this would do the trick----------> http://www.tiger.com.tw/product/9611.html Last edited by Dini; 09-11-2012 at 12:36 AM. |
