| building a tube chassis without a welder
Just curious what methods there are out there to build a tube chassis without a welder. I've seen people use brake line but how do you keep it together? Sorry for the newbish question. |

Harris Safety Silv 45 for brazing with a Mapp gas torch. Lots of topics on this in the Tools and Procedures section too.

Harris safety silv 45 and a map gas torch is what I have been using to do all my chassis builds.

I have mig, tig, and stick, but I still prefer safety silv 45.

Before you start buying stuff to build your own chassis do this. Go cut your finger a couple times. Then burn the hell out of it. If you are good after you do that a few times. Buy what you need to build your new chassis. It will be sick.

im mechanically inclined, work on my own 1:1 cars, that sort of thing. I think the learning curve for me is going to be in the design. I've now seen some video of guys who have scale drawings of the chassis they are going to build up front, and they bend the parts to match the drawing....im not going to be able to touch that. I think I'll start small. maybe replace the plastic cage on the G6 kit I'm going to get with metal tubing. and grow from there. | |

Good call but it wont take long! Have fun and make sure the pieces fit "snug" are really what you want before you throw down some of that expensive brazing rod! It sucks having to undo multiple joints.

I'm sure that this isn't the best idea, but I have used just rosin core solder and 3/16" brake line to make stuff like roll bars or spare tire holders. I don't know if solder will hold up to the abuse of a chassis but you could always try I guess.

If you want to do some tube work on the super cheap... Use brake line and braze it with pieces of metal wire coat hangers.... Dip them in powdered Borax cleaner for flux. With safety silv available there is no comparison, but if you want to build of repair something on the cheap or in a pinch with no safety silv available, coat hangers will do the trick.
