| Building a strong AR60
Hi guys, quick question, and potentially a stupid one. Beef tubes are there to stiffen the plastic housing and give the C-hubs something a little more solid to screw into right. so to get an alloy housing will it still benefit from beef tubes, or will it just not fit?? |

It might depend on what housing your talking about, I'm sure I've read somewhere on here about beef tubes being used in vanquish housings as the stip the chub threads quite easily, not sure about other brands of housings.

id imagine unless the alloy housings were stripped out at the chub you would have a hard time successfully running a screw through both the threads of the axle tube and the beef tube threads. if they fit you would certainly gain a little lower cg. |

Just tossing up wether to get beef tubes for plastic housing or get alloy housing.

Plastic slides better on rocks.

Its for a big 6th scale build im working on at the moment. Its gonna be rather heavy and since i have an alloy rear axle i thought id match it up front. But im just wanting the stronger option. Sliding on rocks isnt a priority for this build.

If you get the Vanquish axle housings you can just epoxy the chubs on the housings. Sounds crazy, I know. I have a set and kept fighting the screw holes stripping as mentioned above. Drilled 4 holes using 3mm, then made them 4mm. Never held. Finally just epoxied the chubs to the housings, you can still acces the end bearings. Plus you'll get better pinion bearing support with the AL axles.

the better pinion support is a factor i hadnt considered and is well worth the AL upgrade im thinking. Epoxying the Chubs is a rather ingenious yet simple solution to a never ending problem too. thanks for that, i likely would never have thought of it myself. heres a link to my build so you can see what im going to be doing with this information. Yep, tha epoxying came out of necessity. This rig was 15lbs RTR and needed to stay together. Szczerba's 2.2 CXT I use 5 minute two part epoxy from Walmart. Mix it up and put on axle splines. I still use set screws and put a little on the screw threads too. |

Heres what I did. Post #67. Super Wraith Super Low Gearing I also did this for my 1/6 hummer build. I did both nylon insert and steel insert. Steel is better. Used 6-32 screws. Added 2 bearings to the rear axle too. |

Don't forget, Vanquish now makes the chubs that clamp onto the housing...

i really like the VP hubs n knuckles but just cant justify $100 for the set. i paid $120 for the integy rear axle, but was ok with that as i had all the bits to make it stronger inside. perhaps i should scour the classifieds for a used one. id spend up to $120 including post for a used one if it had all the good bits in it. anyway. seems alloy is the way to go for this as far as the axle housing is concerned, even if only for the better pinion bearing support. |
