Default T4 Rally Raid Truck Advice needed

Well, it's Dakar time, and I just cannot get enough of the T4 Trucks. Especially this one.

So I am thinking about knocking up an RC replica. Of course, it won’t be a perfect replica, as I don’t have the skills to knock up a Tatra cab from scratch, but I am hoping to snag a Bruder Man cab for not too much and go from there.

I have some ideas on how to make the rear body, either with styrene or fiberglass, but my biggest concern is what chassis to build / buy for it. I don’t have a big pile of spare parts lying around to steal from, so I will basically need to buy everything. Seems like by the time I am all done I would be better off buying a kit than sourcing all the parts individually. It would also mean that I stood a better chance of the parts working together!

I want to build something that looks ‘right’, so that will determine how narrow the axles will need to be (I haven’t had a chance to measure one up yet, so not sure what that number will end up being), and I like the idea of leaf spring and beam axles (even though the Tatra above has independent). I also like the idea of a 2 speed transmission, so I can crawl and still have a little speed when I want (it is a race truck, after all!).

My question is this … I don’t want to spend a fortune, so what should I be looking at for a chassis? I see some good stuff over on RC4WD, and also the Tamiya Hi-Lifts, is there anything else I should be looking at, or recommendations you guys can give me? Or should I just man up and build my own …?

Thanks for the help, and the inspiration!

From what I heard it is a similar chassis configuration to their rally cars. That is really all I know though. We could run a class for them here if there is enough interest.
