Default The Styrene Challenge #2 - Flat bottom boat

I am excited to present to you, the 2nd Styrene Challenge, courtesy of Challenge #1 winner - sideweeler

Flat bottom boat

All rules are the same from last week with one exception, scale. Although I would like every entrant to be in 1/10th scale, your entry may be in a smaller scale.

As always, be creative, try new things, keep it simple or go all out, but most importantly, have fun!

To enter, simply follow the rules below. No need to post up "Im in", as at the end of the 2 week period I will simply verify who all met the rules and enter them into the voting poll.

Rules:

- Contest is open to all RCCRAWLER members.
- No wood or metal is allowed, only styrene. Of course, glues, putty/filler and paint are allowed.
- Entrants must post at least 5 build pics along with the final piece (total of 6 pictures, all of which can be placed in a single post or throughout the two week build)
- Final piece must be painted - painting skills will not be a factor in the voting process.
- Must be a new build (piece cannot have already been made and posted elsewhere)
- Although not mandatory, feel free to offer your own tips and tricks during your build or at any time really.
- Must be as close to 1:10 scale as possible (exception made for this challenge, may be smaller than 1:10 scale).

**Must have your entry posted by July 12th @ 8 pm CDT**

Aight fellas, though I really enjoyed the toolbox challenge, I will be sitting this one out.

I have never had a desire for boats, not even 1:1's, nor do I need/want a scale one. So I think I will save my latest shippment of styrene for the next one. With that said, I will keep a check on this challenge. Im sure there will be some interesting projects.

Good luck guys

Reference pic:

To make this boat I decided to use .040/1mm thick sheet due to all the curves. Since Im going the 10' version, a single sheet was all I needed for the bottom and sides. To reinforce the joints of the sides and bottom I am using .060/1.5mm quarter round.

Make some simple outlines of how the side pieces should look then cut them out. Final rounding will be done after the bottom is attached.

Same for the bottom. I wasnt paying attention here and actually didn't get the angles exactly the same on both sides but it should be ok once its all painted. If in the end it looks bad, I will start over

Starting to attach the sides to the bottom

That's all for now......

Almost ready for paint.

Bottom up and secure. Also have the seats framed in.

I didn't get as much angle on the sides as I wanted. Next time, I will use templates to get the right angle and probably make the whole process a little easier.

Ribbing on the sides. Used two pieces of quarter round to get that half round

Just a little clean up and maybe a couple more details to add before paint.

Looks interesting. I'll have to get some styrene to practice with and maybe I'll get in on the next one:thumbup:

Got my schematic sized up to 1:10 scale, and all the styrene I need.

I think I ended up using .060 styrene for the hull and sides, thicker than I intended, but it was all the hobby shop had at the time.

This is what I used for the floor

I just used some scrap pieces of 1/8 square rod for spacing the strips apart

Got the sides taped and glued, put a brace in to keep the shape I want while I get everything else in place.

Got the floor bracing in, seats, and front deck made.

This is what I used to get the body line on the sides, I'm also using this on the bottom for the correct look.

Then for the hand rail I used 1/8 in rod.

And this is where I am so far, still a lot to do, then on to paint.

I am in on this one too - just havent posted any pics yet.

sidewheeler, looks like you found the same schematics I did! LOL

I have pretty limited resources on the styrene tho, and my lhs doesnt carry it - yet. so mine probably wont be as detailed as some of the others - but hey - its about having fun, and stretching the skills - right?

That's right, who cares how exact it is so long as you're having fun doing it. Although with your skills I'm sure you'll pull it off well. I wasn't going to build one but I started one about 30 minutes ago lol. So I will post up some pics in the morning.

Well from what I read, the 10ft Jon Boats are only rated for 3hp, but I figured what's an extra half a horse lol. I think it all turned out pretty well for winging it lol.
