Just get a flaring tool.

I'll try to get a pic of the completed front end tonight.

It'll all make sense then.

I have used hollow carbon shafts and never had a durability problem the steel ones should work fine. Great idea on the flaring of the tubing it looks saweet.

would take forever to do, but threading the threaded rod all the way through would make the links plenty beefy i would think?

Interesting idea about the links, I like it. So the majority of the inside of the link is hollow?

Here's the near complete link assembly.

Lowers are the regular aluminum links that have been used on Ralph for ages.

The uppers are the crap I've been working on. Basically they're a larger version of the stock Wheely King upper link.

The center section is made from 3/16" brake tubing with the 4-40 blind nut welded and brazed in place. This is what attaches the "V" of the link to the axle. A 4-40 screw passes through the upper link mount and threads into the center of the "V".

The two outer links are the 1/4" brake tubing with 8-32 blind nuts welded and brazed in place. Sections of 8-32 threaded rod and some Kyosho 6.8mm ball ends with flanged balls complete the upper links.

More steel will be added shortly.

Is there a reason why you opt for U link rather the 4 link?

The Wheely King axles use this config in stock form.

I decided to carry this over to Ralph instead of making a bunch of aluminum bits to mount a conventional 4-link.

An advantage to doing it this way is that the Wheely King axles stay, for the most part, intact.

I also have no detectable axle steer.

Very cool JIA. I learned something new with the flared ends. I might have to pick me one of those up, I like how it looks. Granted, I suck at measuring it in the first place, so they're always short or long anyway. Pretty ends won't make mine look any better. heh

I really like those triangulated 3 link uppers like that. You're right, that will be very solid.

It's stout right now but to make strong enough for Ralph I'll beef it up a bit.

Cross support bars parallel to the base?

Just one on the wide end.

Since the upper links remain stationary in relation to one another I'll cut some sheet steel and make an electronics shelf that will be welded/brazed to the upper links.

Between the cross brace and sheet steel it'll be stout.

Hey JIA, What are you using to attach the shocks? Or are you attaching them to the axles? I'm just curious cause I'm re-doing the rear four link on my Gecko 2 to give it a 16.5 inch wheelbase and was wondering what I should use to attach the shocks.

Sorry for the hijack.

Probably near 10lbs like normal.

krawlinCJ,

The shocks are mounted to the axles using stock link/shock mounts but rotated.

No progress on the rig tonight.

Went to a buddy's house to help him with Christmas presents for his kids.

My Whitebone showed up today. Stuck Ralph on the trailer and watched the trailer tires squat a bit.

Tomorrow should be a short work day, that means more time to build!

As of now the front is completely done, just need to add the steering servo.
