Default Jeepin-Paul's 1/6 Jeep Willys Build for 2012

I have been waiting a while to get some good progress on my 1/6 scale Jeep Willys build before I started a post. The front suspension is a 3-link with panhard bar system. The rear is a standard 4-link suspension design. the axles have home-machined steel longer Beef tubes. I used Axial Aluminum AX-10 front end parts with XR-10 components. I am a bit worried that the AX-10 rear axles with extension sleives are going to break (maybe AR-10 rear axles will be installed). The roll cage, front bumper, rear bumper, and truss mounts are solid rod that's stick welded for bullet-proof strength. I'm especially proud of the bumper construction with the D-ring/shackle mounting holes milled through the bumper, the mounts pressed into the bumper, and then welded from behind. I got the Hasbro Jeep from Flea-Bay for only $46 delivered! Check it out so far...

The beer can is only for size reference. I don't endorse beer drinking while enjoying the build of a custom RC Crawling Jeep...

Great start! id like to see some better pics of the front end setup! i like how you used the existing plastic stuff for the spacers for the tubes.

I was not happy with the look of the rollcage, so I welded in top diagonals and grab handles. Now I am happy with it...

Yea... the driver is pissed off, because the mechanic is taking too long to build the rig.

The plastic sleives are the trim rings, because I got too lazy to machine nice aluminum beauty rings. I do plan on making a nice set to finish off the axles better. When I tear it down, I will break-down the axles for better photos of my in-house machined longer beef tube extensions and the XR-10 front end components. I am even thinking of trying to do home anodizing to black-out all the Aluminum links & trim rings.

The steering performance of the AX-10 axles modified with Aluminum XR-10 C-Hubs & Knuckles and my steel beef tubes is great. I am going to make the conversion on all my SCX-10 based craewlers, as funding permits.

This was a boring step of the build: I made a hood hinge from brass...

I have been making slow & steady progress on the Willys build. The 280 in-oz steering servo & MIP CVDs came in the mail and were installed. I welded up a set of rock sliders too. The steering is fantastic with the XR-10 parts on the AX-10 modified axles. The front end 3-link/panhard bar set-up works perfectly with zero bump-steer. I cut the hole for mounting the cooling fan in the grill. The RC4WD wheels are mounted and a set of PVC inner adapters are ready to mount up with the Super Swampers. The last thing I need to obtain is a motor & ESC... Then it is time to tear it down for the dark green gloss body paint. Look at the the progress photos...

I installed the motor & electronics last night. I also mounted the Proline Super Swampers too (I turned a set of PVC beveled adapter inner rings for the job). I put 7 ounces of stick-on wheel weights in each tire, so it will have some nice low weight to lessen roll-overs. I think it is time to tear it all down for final body paint !!!! Look...

Great looking build!
The tube work is fantastic!
Nice job on the links!

What length are the shocks?
What kind of articulation do you get?
Do the tires rub the fenders?

90 mm SCX-10 Shocks.
4 inches of flex.
The tires don't rub the fenders, but the front tire rubs the bumper when cranked at a full turn, but the XR-10 front components give extreme steering... which is a good thing !!!

12.75 inch wheelbase.
11 inch Track Width (from outer edge of tire to the other tire on the same axle).

Thanks for the nice comment. I have practiced a lot to get pretty good with the stick welding on the 1/4 & 3/16 inch rod to make a roll cage. I only have to grind/file about 10% of the welds. It is tough... even with my welder at the lowest amperage, it still is too hot for the 1/16" 6013 rod.

Here is the Jeep back together after I painted the wheel wells satin black tonight. I am going to paint the bright silver Aluminum links a nice flat black next. It still need lots of detail work on it, but it is a runner now...
