| Just another '41 Willys
Well here goes nothing. I have always enjoyed reading the 1/6 G.I Joe Willys build threads, which lead to me wanting one for a long time. Last month I worked out a deal with my buddy 51WillysJeep, and a week later I had a rather large box being handed to me by the mail man. You all know what the 1/6 Willy's look like, but I'm going to post pics anyways. It did come complete with the stock frame and tires. I've read the threads by Zoso and how easy it is to turn these beasts into an RC. I'm not that great of a custom builder, so I scratched my head for awhile, debating on if I wanted to go the standard route like so many others have done. Well, last week I decided it wasn't going to build itself. I went digging in my parts over stock boxes and grabbed a SCX10 chassis, as well as some scrap chassis rails. I brazed 3 inches on to the back end of the rails so the chassis would run the whole lenght of the jeep body and then some. * this is where a picture of the above would have been, if I had stopped to snap pictures * Next I placed the chassis under the jeep and used some all thread rod to set the width I wanted. * this is where a picture of the above would have been, if I had stopped to snap pictures * I brazed in some crossmembers front and rear. I was happy with the width of the chassis and how well it fell into place under the jeep. I guess I forgot to mention that I will be using Wraith axles and a GCM Racing transfer case in place of the ever so popular AX10/Wheely King axles and the RC4WD disruptor t-case. Here is where it gets kinda boring. For the time being I'm using stock scx10 parts, until I get my new shop area set up. I do plan on making some shock hoops out of 3/16" brake line, as well as some bumpers, a grill hoop and of course a full cage. At the moment the rear links are the stock wraith links and the fronts are something I had kicking around or threw together. The shocks are stock SCX10 shocks. On to the pictures The skid plate may be changed or something will be built in order for the wraith skid plate to work. Here are some pics of the body on the chassis. I have a few idea's for mounting the body to the chassis. That's it for now. It maybe awhile before there is any progress with this build. It is being boxed up and shoved to the side. I'm selling my house and hope to have any builds and tools put away during showings. Thanks for looking. Last edited by Jester666; 02-15-2012 at 01:17 AM. |

Thanks man, glad you are enjoying it so far. I'm sure you'd be more then willing to hold on to it. I doubt I'll keep the stock Rips Saw tires. I have a set of 2.2 Rok Lox's that were put to the side as well as some 2.2 Pro-line Swampers. I guess I'll have to wait until I build the jeep up more and then decide. Has anyone mounted a Quick Sand winch on to a 1/6 Willys build? Would it look scale or to big? Cheers!

You can flip the axles, then flip the ring gear to fix the drive line angles.

Your Willys build lured me in... I love the old flat fenders! Nice work so far, look forward to seeing how it turns out when you get a chance to get at it again. A Willys will definitely be my first build when I get around to it. And fairly soon I'll be sending a couple winches to a friend of mine that plans to put one on his Willys... hopefully he'll post some pics. |

The drive line angles aren't as bad as the pics make them look, but it maybe something too look into. Thanks for the suggestion Quote:
Thanks Neil. I've been drooling over these builds for awhile now and was pumped to get started on my own. Sadly the jeep has been sitting in the closest since my last post. I hope your friend posts some pics of his QS winch mounted on the front of his G.I Jeep. I can't wait to get my QS winch, I'm in no hurry though. I just came back from Vegas and am tapped for spending cash at the moment
