| What Motor, ESC and Gearing are you using on your Jeep Willys?
I just finished building my Franken_Willy. I call it Franken_willy because of all the donor parts I am using on this build. I will upload photos when I can and I have photos from when I bought the Jeep to now running. Here are the parts I used. 2003 Hasbro Jeep 110mm Dual Spring shocks ARB TREX 60 axle Mayhem servo 2.2 Rock Stompers 2.2 Beadlock Steel White Wheels R2 Transmission V2 T1 Disruptor transfer Case 55 Turn motor AE-2 ESC (from my Wraith) for now Aluminum links for 4 link set up Punisher Shafts G-Made Shafts Traxxas shafts (Thanks for suggestion Zozo) The Jeep is running. I got it running tonight. But she is running very slow. I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on motor and gearing. Or maybe you can post what you are using for motor and gearing Last edited by Quiel; 10-05-2012 at 09:37 PM. Reason: Spell check |

Nice build! I think your slow speed issue is with the R2 trans and the under drive Disruptor t-case, that's a lot of gear reduction between the 2. You can use a bigger pinion on the motor but it's not going to change the speed a whole lot. You would see the biggest gain in speed by using the over drive gear ratio Disruptor t-case. |

Or put a 27t motor in it. That would double the speed! Been a while since I had a large scale shafty. Guess what I'm building right now |

Axial transmission w/ Robinson Racing gears 87t spur RC4WD .75:1 transfer case Holmes Hobbies 10t Cobalt Puller (best brush motor ever) 13t pinion Tekin FX-R esc Best of both worlds. From a slow controlled crawl with mad torque on tap, to faster than I can walk beside it, with a single speed transmission. And running a computer fan in the grill high temps are never an issue. I run pack after pack for hours (if I have the time!) and never have any component get too warm to touch. The FX-R is capable of a "scale" tune so to speak, so if you let off the throttle the rig will coast for 6 feet or so. You have to use the brake (also tunable) if you need to stop quicker. Adds to the challenge and fun of driving it. Nice Shore Patrol edition, that turned out good... Last edited by Big Mike; 10-06-2012 at 10:59 AM. |

I don't know how long a R2 would live w/ a 27T motor, I literally cooked one running one of your 500 Cobalt motors in a 8lb. Yota scaler a few years ago, the trans literally lasted 15 minutes before the gears turned into dust. my drivetrain setup for the orange Jeep is: AX-10 trans up front w/ a 87/16 gear set up, I run a Disruptor T-case w/ the 2.18:1 gearing, Axial hardened over drive gears in the axles. I use a HH 35T torque master on a 3s LiPo. I have plenty of slow speed control and *barely* enough full throttle speed, it's a slow walking pace at full throttle. I got some proto motors for my willys project over 4 years ago. Big, Smooth, and $400 each I ended up taking one for the dyno, burned one up, and sent a few out for testing. They are now the equivalent of a Pro4 motor, so I will either dig up one of the protos or just pull a Pro4 off the shelf. |

I actually have a HH torquemaster pro 35T motor I can probably use. I just need to head up to the LHS and pick up a higher turn pinion to match. My R2 transmission came with a 8T 32P pinion. I will try this and see how it works before I go and order a HH 27T. |

Throw in the 35t and see how you like it with the gearing. Just be easy on the r2. I had forgotten how fragile they are, its been years since I destroyed one.

I have a extra Axial Wraith transmission still in a bag somewhere in my garage (I have to find it and see if I still have it). I read somewhere that they are basically the same as AX-10 tranny. If it is, I can use this as a back up when I blow up the R2. I believe Axial is running on 48 pitch plus I don't have any extra pinions I can use. Last edited by Quiel; 10-06-2012 at 06:45 PM.

I'm using 45t brushed motor HH BRXL esc 3s axial transmision x2 87t spur ? pinion WK diffs For a very slow walking pace, I previosly had R1 diffs and the speed was better so I will try some different spur/pinion combo's and try and get a bit more wheelspeed before changing motors. |

Does these Willy's have issues with heat? I cut up my gril and replaced it with wire mesh for air to come in. I wonder if I need to install a fan? Right now I am using a Axial AE-2 ESC but going to replace it with a HH BR-XL.

I suggest running a fan ...these rigs weight alot and we all tend to push them really hard Fan*60x60mm*7.2v**::*GI*Joe... the 35t and HH BR-XL will work great....but the R2 will blow up sooner or later |

Can I rig the fan to plug into my receiver or do I need a separate power supply?

So I run an r3 2 speed tranny with the stock 64/16 32 pitch with a hammer t-case at 1:47/1 with stock wraith axle gears . 35t HH torquemaster/ brxl combo on 3s power. In 1st gear it is faster than a quick walking speed and in second gear its as fast as as a stock wraith . My Willy's is 14 lbs and I still haven't broke the stock axle gears and I run the snot out of it, it has great crawling speed with crazy blip power. Got to give props to Holmes Hobbies that is the only motor/esc I will ever buy again so smooth and powerful so much control with his stuff . The guys are right about the r2 it won't last to long with a heavy rig as well as the t-rex axles. I don't want to knock rc4wd stuff to hard but both of those pieces are on the weaker side as well I put an 12v 2" fan in on a micro switch for when it is hot out. I get anywhere from an 1hr-1.5 hrs run Time on a 2250mah/3s

I put on my HH 35T Torquemaster Expert with the same 8T pinion that came with the R2 transmission. She is now at walking speed but nothing close to a Wraith. I also added a fan that ZoSo recommended. I changed the plug so I can plug in it my receiver. The fan fit right inside the grill. I am using a Futaba 4PL but had to adjust my throttle since it will not stay still at 0. Would this run a little faster if I change my pinion to a 11T or 16T. I have this in my parts container. Last edited by Quiel; 10-13-2012 at 06:36 PM. |
