Default My Tonka Jeep body Tuber build

I started with the general Losi mini drive train with all the regular locker hop ups. I found this Tonka Jeep and took the body. Here is the beginning of the build.

First came the body extension...added 1 inch to take it from a CJ5 to a CJ7 length.

Then the rear was narrowed and welded together.

Front fenders went next.

here is the body with the belly plate.

the inner frame on a quick jig.

nuts for body mounting

all mounted up

the start of the roll cage. I think I will use the dash, install a single bucket, and install lights. that will probably be the extent of "scale" additions.

I am still deciding on the roll cage. Should the rear be a family cage or straight bars like a CJ? Or the other idea is maybe a cage only over the driver?

I am pretty sure I am not going with competition rules. I am thinking of a 10" wheel base & 4 wheel steering. The tires are still up in the air...flatirons or the new proline?

More to come. Any opinions or suggestions are appriciated.

Looking great. Make it a full cage and keep the low-profile look.

Going to look really cool! Where did you come across the body?

On Ebay. I typed in tonka jeep and i sifted through about 300 choices. I think i ended up paying $2.00 but freight was $10. It is really light and aesy to weld on & work with.

Let me see how this one turns out. I always build one...sell it and then build another with all the changes I see after it is completed. . That way I get the best one! HAHA!

I wish I had taken a before picture. It had to be done...the body as it was was too short for how wide it was. Plus it didn't fit the losi wheel base very well.

Here are more pictures showing the build to date:

I started with making it a family cage. It didn't look right so I changed it.

I think the rear looks better straight bar like a long CJ.

Here it is at a 8.5" wheel base. It looks bad...not to mention that I won't be using this for competition so why not go bigger?

This is sitting at about 10" wheel base. MUCH BETTER!

If I go with rear steer the rear of the body will have to be cut shorter to clear a servo. Still unsure of if I should go rear steer or go with a front winch instead. I really like the rear look right now. It is swaying me to got with a winch just so I can keep the rear fenders the way they are. Oh...the rear will also have LED taillights.

The front end will be getting a small grill with LED headlights and a stinger (endo) hoop. It will all be tied to the cage with tube fenders.

I won't have any more build for a week. Going camping for the holiday and with work and packing the trailer up, there won't be much time before I leave on Wednesday to work on it. So far so good I think. Still need to come up with paint schemes. Should I go with these tires or something else like the scale Mudslingers, Swampers, or maybe the new Proline Chissel?

I'm going for a "King of the Hammers" look...not a modified stock look. I get what u r saying...it would fit the look if it were built to look more stock.

Sweet, I have seen a few Tonka jeeps on the Bay, didnt know if anyone had done a build with one before. Here it is! Looks cool, like the cage and the fact that the body is metal, you said it was fairly easy to work with? Cutting, bending, brazing?
