Default Ricochet's 6X6 Build

First off I got to say imthatguy is a bad influence. I saw his Loco thread and it got me wanting to build a 6X6. The same way his SCX10 II got me wanting to build a jeepspeed build.

Anyway I started getting parts together to build a 6X6 for a winter project. So far I've torn apart my old SCX10 JK, got extra frame rails, a pass thru axle, 6 1.9 super swampers, GCM transfer case, GCM front motor mount, GCM chassis servo mount, GCM panhard kit, GCM 4 and 3 link mounts, and a Proline 66 F100 shell. Hence the 66X6. Plan right now for the paintjob is red and black marble going to all black at the top.

Still got to figure out the rear linkages, I've seen them with the 2 rear axles tied together by the lower links or triangulated to the frame and drop down tabs. Probably have to wait till I get the frame extended to see what will work.

If anybody wants to drop some knowledge on building a 6X6 feel free, I got a feeling I'm going to need all the help I can get.

Through my trials and resting. I found for me the best rear setup is a mirrored 4 link. Both rear axles have short 4links braced between the two axles. A 4 linked walking beam was also very good

More parts came in today. Got shock hoops, driveshafts, shocks and rod ends. Almost ready to get started.

Still need to get a esc, a servo, probably a different motor.

OK need a little help. I'm thinking the cab might be too big for the look of the truck. I realize it might be hard to really tell until the body gets trimmed but yes or no ?

Mock up the cab with the wheels, tires, and axles you're going to use and go from there.
Here is the rear suspension set up I used. It's based on a kit from RC4WD and is intended for 1/14th Tamiya tractors. I modified it to work with Yota axles, so you could make it work with some creativity.

Although much less refined than yours, I have a similar setup. The best solution I could come up with

Worked on the 6X6 a little this weekend. Got all the bottom links figured out just gotto figure the tops out now. Then comes driveshafts.

GCM front motor mount, servo mount and transfer case installed.

Haven't decided if I'm going to leave the frame extension bolted on or braze it all together.

The wheelbase came out 16.5 inches with a frame length of 21.

Top down view of GCM parts.

2nd axle uses the factory mounts for the links. I've got to move the cross brace between the shock towers as the 4 link mount hits on full compression.

3rd axle is mounted to frame with standoffs behind second axle shock towers.

Still not sure on the cab. I think I'm going to go with a hardbody on this as I don't have any yet. I really like Todd Pearson's Doxy Wrecker, been looking for parts to do something similar for the cab

OK the Ford body is definitely out, got a Tamiya Jeep Wrangler body on the way. This will be my first hardbody along with my first time hacking a hardbody, should be fun. Got some revo 1/16th shocks and Twin Hammers cantilever pivots for running cantilever on the rear axles. Just waiting on some 3d printed mounts to get here. I'm hoping to get the chassis running this weekend before doing much more to make sure it all works out.

I've been searching for pics and studying the ones I can find of Todd's build for ideas and seeing how he did it.

The body arrived today. Got to do a little cutting and glueing and bracing to get it where I want it.

Extending the cab or cutting it short?

Cutting it short. Trying to do something similar to Todd Pearson's Doxy.

Finally got the rear axle links figured out. They're not perfect, the axle moves back about a 1/4 inch at full compression. Going to keep playing with them trying to get it better.

Got the parts to put cantilever suspension on the rear axles. Combination of Traxxas shocks, Vaterra hinges and imthatguy mounts.

Heres my primitive drawing. Lol. I hope its easy to understand
The more horizontal your links are the less the distance changes from middle axle to rear axle. When your links are angled the arc that the axle moves on bring the axle farther away

That's why I went to the setup I have now. If you need more pictures let me know. My links are pretty horizontal to the ground so the distance between the two axles changes very little

If you need anything specific let me know. I used CBEFab gear shock towers turned upside-down. That gave me tons of link mounting points. Custom made the links out of aluminum tube that I drilled and tapped, they make premade links roughly the same length as well. The distance from full droop to full compression only increases by a couple mm at most.
