what did you start crawling with?

Just got my son his first r/c. He got a losi mini. We put bent links and metal lockers for miss so far. I want to get a crawler to play with him but am having hard time making hp my mind. I was thinking night crawler. Then started looking at ax10. Still reading lots to figure out what to get.

That is a broad subject to cover... If you want a comp style rig to just simply crawl with your son then the AX10 is a great start IMO. I have never owned a Night Crawler so I couldn't tell ya but I did start crawling with an rtr Mini like your sons a few years ago and I was very surprised with what it could do. Got me hooked I can right off the bat. If you wanna go scale then a rtr scx10 hands down. Also if you want availability of hop ups then the AX10 IMO is a better route. I went with a SCX-10 with the Dingo body as my first crawler, but I wanted the scale truck look.

The AX10 is a good all around truck, the LNC isn't bad, but a requires a bit more maintenance than other trucks. If it were me, I'd get a MRC as well. You guys will have a blast covering the same ground, and you'll learn from each other when you upgrade and crawl.

My first time out I had a Brushless Losi Comp Crawler and 2 creepers for the kids. Back again almost 2 years later and I have a creeper kit on the way again....

Just had to go look. I always wanted a Losi 1/24 Micro Rock Crawler Bind N Drive, as have a few of the RTR 2.4Ghz transmitters laying around....Sigh

I started with an RS10 XT, but the AX10 and SCX10 are crazy fun also. Only tires needed with the RS10, but the SCX10 was money out of the box, unless you get into a tight spot and you will find that the stock suspension links and steering links flex a lot. All rc's will crave upgrades eventually. If you want to find parts and upgrades easily, stick with the SCX10/AX10 platform.

I started with an SCX10, and I still have the thing. They're amazing. They are almost always easy to find upgrades for, and they're easy to drive, too. However, they have more of a challenge on smaller obstacles than an AX10, but that makes it a bit more fun. IMO, AX10 or SCX10 would be your best bets.

I bought a used TLT on ebay in 2006 and the axles are still in use in my first scale build. For years these axles lived in my 2.2 Shafty comp truck. The rig was just recently retired from scale competition but still drves like a dream today. It's the pictured in my Avitar.

I started with an LNC and went to an LCC... The worms are a pain maintenance wise, but there are some tricks and the auto braking... Once you drive it you wont want an esc brake.

I realise this thread is a month old, so the issue might have been settled.

If you want to run with your kid do use the same type of crawler! With very different performance it just isn't fun, I know this from experience.
If you want to have a blast with the local club you need a crawler fitting with the class(es) they run.

Back to the 2.2 class crawlers:
I started with a Losi Comp Crawler a couple of years ago, and still love it. In hindsight a Night Crawler had been a better option though.
The Losi crawlers require a little more maintenance than Axials, but you'll end up tinkering a lot with any crawler so it's a non-issue.
(I then got a Losi Micro Crawler (1:24) for my son. A cool but pretty limited little toy.)
Since my son didn't like driving the Micro while I was driving the LCC I bought him a Redcat RS10. That one he liked, but I don't recommend it for anyone "serious" to the hobby.
