Hey guys just driving my Traxxas Rustler(not a vxl) on the carpet and I got it for christmas and all of a sudden sparks flew out of the motor! Bone stock except for an onyx 5000 11.1v lipo and proline paddle tires, any ideas? It smells awfull! Hope I ain't got to get a new motor!

Almost positive the ESC is not capable of 3s, Prolly fried everything.

The manual most likely explains that.

Now you can upgrade to a VXL system and run your 3s battery to your hearts content.

Yeah, something probably 'sploded. The xl5 only handles 2s. Plus traxxas stock motors go out quite a bit even on only 2s

Man judging by the comments already seems like I made a mistake, any idea of a vxl pricing?

Is the bad smell isolated to the motor only? If a battery is plugged in and you hit the throttle do the lights on the esc still show forward, neutral and reverse?

im thinken your esc might be ok you might have had an obstruction in your motor like a shim that shorted out your motor my suggestion would be to replace the motor & get a 2s pack & try again to see what happens before you through down a bunch of cash for a new system do you have a spare motor that you can test the esc with?

You ran a 3s lipo in an xl5 ESC?
Shits toast.
Vxl motor is brushless. Need brushless ESC.

is it brushed or brushless? if you have a xl5 esc its brushed only & should run all the way down to a 12t brushed motor if you have 3 wires coming out of your motor than its brushless & wont work with this esc

Sweet.
Toss it in, toss the lipo in. make sure ESC is on Lipo setting.
And prepare to start upgrading parts.

Had one a while ago, stupid nuts, and pretty much impossible to drive on 3s.
