Default Magnets for body mount

Hallo
I am struggling to work out a robust solution to mount an Hilux body (only cabin) on my scx10

I would like to avoid using the side screws ... And I saw several builds using magnets

Could you please address me to a site / shop where I can find proper magnets for this application ?

I saw many on eBay but not quite sure they are strong enough....

Thanks a lot!!

Ebay sells all sorts of magnets, they have some that have a beveled 4mm hole! I just bought a few that were 16x8mm, 4mm thick or something like that. Super strong. Why not a reverse body mount that goes through somewhere on your chassis

thank you very much, very helpful
I was thinking some of these to be installed on my chassis, and couple on the body side -w/o hole- to avoid drilling the body
Do you think I can glue the magnets onto the body (inner side of course) with some special glue? or would that not be strong enough?

Thanks a lot!

I don't like magnets for off-road. I tried them and every time you roll or flip the vehicle, the body will come off. Magnets work great for on road until you hit something.

I used Shoe Goo to mount the magnets on the underside of the body. Two of them pulled off and the lexan paint came with the magnets.

These are the magnets I used and they come with cups to capture the magnets: Rare-Earth Magnet, Cup & Washer Sets - Lee Valley Tools

I was able to find rare earth magnets at my local home depot. They have 5lb hold each, should be plenty strong to hold the body on. Hitting it on something or rolling it though would cause the body to move or come off as mentioned earlier.

If you are doing serious rock crawling body posts are probably best but if you are doing light crawling and trail driving magnets should work fine.

You can check to see if they have them locally to you.

Edit: I just saw you are in Italy. I'm sure you can order these online somewhere.

Have you considered Velcro? I use the heavy-duty, industrial strength type with good success. Yes, I really bad tumble will likely dislodge the body, but I've yet to have a body fly off completely. I use a nickle to quarter sized (20 mm) piece on the body and at the mounting locations. You'll need to fabricate a mount that fits flush with the top of the body posts for one side of the Velcro to adhere to. Hope this helps!

I second the velcro idea - it's what I use on my SCX10.

Rare earth magnets work very well my wifes cc01 has them holding her wrangler body on with tube sticking up slightly to keep from sliding to the side under impact and i can pick the thing up by the body with steel wheels on it and a 6 cell nimh pack and it doesn't fall off

Thanks all guys!

All info you provided are valuable for me! Now I can figure out what best suits my rig and my needs!

- Actually my rig is meant for crawling as well so I need a fairly robust solution.
- Body is the RC4WD Toyota Hilux made of ABS (only cabin, want to use either the rear frame of my honcho or think about other options) so I think Shoe goo should just work fine.
- Anyway I seem to understand that I have to work out a smart solution to come up with something that does not come off after a few falls or while getting in hard touch with rocks...
- haven't thought about Velcro yet but that sounds a smart solution as well, though I can not estimate the "strength" of this option as I never had industrial Velcro in hands..will get some to test..
- About magnets I saw quite a few options on eBay Italy or UK, same price level and quality as for those you referred to in your posts, so I can easily get what I need....as soon as I decide what solution to go for (drilling the body will be the very last option as I would like to keep the scale look as much as possible, that's why I was thinking about magnets...)

Will post a pic of the details soon so you can get an idea of how the layout of my rig+body looks like

Thanks again

I've used velcro
only problem is...

if the ambient temps become excessively hot...
the sticky back of the velcro can occasionally release
when a slight impact occurs.

And if it does...
seems like it instantly becomes a dirt magnet
contaminating it to the point of needing replacement.

I think magnets are probably a better way.
at least here in the hot SW summers.

Michael's craft stores have some good quality
neodymium magnets in various cylindrical diameters.
And they are coated and not raw.
Obviously the larger diameter magnets are stronger.

looky: Magnets

And if using only four... and they're not holding as well as wanted...
a few more could be added.

I use E6000 to adhere mine to both body and chassis.
But making some body mounts to perch those upon
is your task.

if using Velcro...
utilize the true brand or maybe a 3M product.
Cheaper "like" velcro products will fail easier.

+1 for the velcro. Makes having to remove the body much quicker in my opinion as well.
