Ty would say get the basic kit and upgrade..
i'd got the pro
but i heard the long dampter one is good too if you jump a lot.
im in FL so there terrain is mostly tarmac or technical turns..

just have to figure out if you want upgraded parts when you build it.. or you want to drive it stock then upgrade when needed..
my buddy Ray has the basic kit and he's always losing his dog bones.. so right there.. PRO is the way to go.
LD is up to you.

i dont have a problem with upgrades. its more of the total upfront costs. i have had tamiya kits a lot and love working on them. i need to price some things out.

its a late christmas present to me.

Long travel is the way to go at this point in time. The pro kit really only has the belt and Cvds that are viable upgrades, everything else isn't needed.

Ok so Turtle you think it's absolutely necessary I get the metal diff gears? Basically the only thing keeping me from starting. But I have patients I can wait if need be. I guess what I want to know, is if it's more of a need to have since the box is apart?

Nope I don't at all. In the two and a half years I have been driving this car I have only stripped one spider gear and it was because the diff was dry. Really the only reason I went to metal gears is because I wanted new diffs and all I could find was the metal ones. Plus I have tried every single upgrade they make for the car and thought I would see if there was any difference.

I have been eyeing the XV-01 when news of its release came out...but it seems like scale rally is falling off again! Sure you could consider asphalt jungle Gymkhana a type of rally. But come on blasting 50-60 mph is just not scale even in a larger WR8 platform or the Kyosho DRX.

If they took a gamble and truly designed a rally car that not only is near scale, but also tough in all the right places we might have a new class! Sort of like how short course took off. But look at what happened to the Losi XXX-SCB, AE SC10B RS....sure open wheel RWD scale buggy is a good idea. But the price?! Make it a kit!!

Meanwhile the closest thing we have to rally is the XV-01 and the DF-03Ra. Nothing wrong with either of those except the trannys (well at least in the DF-03Ra) tend to loosen over time given the plastics used and the self taping philips screws that Tamiya for some odd reason still use til this day!

I've owned a TC3 rally conversion, a TB-03 rally conversion, 3 DF-03Ra's mildly loaded with the essentials, a lowered 1st generation Slash 4x4 Platinum I converted to rally for beach runs with a Kyosho IGT1 Subaru WRC body, and I guess you can consider the two brushless HPI Mini Trophy Desert Trucks in the rally category as well...sure they handle realistically, but a little too hard on the throttle and bad landings with today's power plants kiss those arms, shocks, diffs/gears good bye!

I wonder when Tamiya will be brushless and 3s ready LOL!

Alex. That's a lot of words you have there.

Not sure what I have to add or respond too but you have some good points but also seems like you are griping some...

What's needed to make the pro kit into the long damper version? Just curious. My cousin is trying to talk me into a rally.

Highly recommend longer shocks. What I got works very well. But I hear the gmade shocks are a viable shock as well. I believe front are rear lengths eye to eye are 75mm.

I leaning towards one too. Just on the fence. Last sedan I bought (Sprint 2) converted to brushless then sold it. Dont wanna get it and then regret it. Worried about places to run it, only places I can think of is local baseball diamonds. Was thinking of going bigger like DRX but my cousin whats to keep it 1/10th. Are 190mm bodies better fitting than 200mm for the XV01?

190mm bodies are really the only option for the XV01. You can potentially go to 200mm, but will need some silly wide wheels. I think somewhere between 6-9+.

Check the CRC threads and check out all the different locations we run. There is really no limit to the type of terrain these cars can run on.
