Default - Tamiya XV-01 Pro -

Got a new addition to my collection, this time it's a rally car, the recently released Tamiya XV-01 Pro. Been wanting a rally car for quite some time, was thinking about picking up one of those DF-03Ra, but then Tamiya released a new belt driven rally car platform, so I knew I have to get my hands on one of those. Enough talking, let's move on to the build.

Step 1: Differential assembly.

Step 2: Front gear box.

I greased up the teeth using Castrol MP Multi-Purpose Chassis Grease.

Step 3: Attaching differential to front gear box.

Step 4: Attaching motor plate.

Step 5: Attaching spur gear.

Step 6: Attaching motor.

Motor I used for this build is the Castle Creations 7700kv brushless motor.

Step 7: Attaching front damper stay.

Step 8-9: Attaching rear damper stay and gear box.

Step 10: Attaching belt tensioner.

Step 11: Attaching front suspension mount.

Step 12: Steering linkage.

Step 13: Attaching steering linkage.

Step 14: Front knuckles.

Step 15: Front arms.

Step 16: Attaching front arms.

Step 17: Attaching front gear box.

Step 18: Attaching rear suspension mount.

Step 19: Attaching rear arms.

Step 20: Rear axles.

Step 21: Attaching rear gearbox.

Step 22: Attaching rear axles.

Step 23: Attaching drive belt covers.

Step 24: Damper assembly.

Step 25: Damper oil.

Step 26: Attaching dampers.

Step 27-30: Skipped.

Step 31: Attaching wheel well liners.

Step 32-34: Wheel assembly, attaching wheels and urethane bumper.

Wrong section boss.

Edit:

Damn! That is a lot of motor for the car. You may want to tame it down a bit.

Do my eyes deceive me, or are their plastic spider gears in those diffs?

If so, heck, even my TA02 Hummer got metal gears, and this is supposed to be "Pro"? Interesting to see how the platform copes with all those ponies you bolted to the nose!

Does it come with the little foam booties for the ball studs?

I run a Castle Creations 5700kv 4 pole in mine and there has not been a single issue with the gears. And from my experience the car will be un-driveable with anymore then this, even my car is too much for others when I hand the transmitter over to others for a test drive. I love the punch mine has to break the tires free in any condition, I just can't imagine it having any more then it does already.

I am ready to see video of this thing going like a rocket with the 7700 though.

Both versions of the car come with those.

Check out the Rally Section. There a couple build threads on the XV-01 talking about how they drive and what parts break. There are even some videos in all their rally goodness

Thread Hi-jack over.

Whoops, didn't realize there's a rally section now. Can a mod help me to move this thread into the rally section? Thanks!

Now back on the topic. I like a lot of speed, and the 7700kv is the slowest BL motor I've available right now, so yea lol.

I've ran mine with 7700kv motor for a couple of days already, so far so good.

Update: Installing the servo. I picked the Savox SV-0220MG.

Before I install the servo onto the chassis, I took it apart to grease it with Permatex dielectric grease for waterproofing.

Greased the bearing to stop water from getting in.

Also greased the side of the covers.

And of course the PCB.

Now for the servo assembly.

Next will be body works. As much as I like the clean look of the ABC Hobbies stealth body mounts, but they can't really take much abuse, especially on a rally car, so I decided to go with the original body posts on this build. The body I'm using on this build is a Tamiya 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STi WRC, but the front body posts location isn't really where I want it to be, they located it right next to the hood scoop. So I relocated the front body posts to the front urethane bumper instead on the front shocks tower.

Update: Swap to a longer ball end on the shocks, now I have more lift.

Just enough to park my 1/60 240ZG underneath.

Update: Decided to paint the rims that came with the kit.

Primed.

Painted gold.

Also duct taped the inside of the tires, so they don't expend on high speed.

Rims mounted onto the tires, just need to glue them.

Also received my Castle Creations Sidewinder V2 ESC last week.

I'm probably going to run my XV-01 in the rain, so better off to waterproof the ESC as well. Carefully peel the sticker off, then cracked the case open.

Taped up the wires and Plasti Dip it.

Just need to put the ESC back into the case when I have a chance. Now for those who curious on the size of the ESC/receiver box on the chassis, here's a side to side comparison of the Sidewinder V2 (left) and Mamaba Max Pro (right) sitting side by side with the top case off.

Great looking build up!!
Shows 'newbies' like me the parts, pcs., and buildup of that rig!

BTW,
No foams?
Are xblocks better without them?
Has anyone run softs or med softs?

I do have foams in the tires, just not in the pic.

Update: Electronics are in place!

Update: Installed a fan onto the ESC/receiver box cover.

Got the body painted, lights installed.

Here's a short video of it in action. (Sorry the video is out of focus)

What happened in that video you titled: Tamiya XV-01 Pro fail

Was it really the XV-01 that fail or was it you not tightening the wheel properly?

Thanks waw! No flash was used, I used my 1:1 headlights as the lighting.

The camera that I used is a Nikon D5100, F/10 +2.0, forgot about the ISO though.

Didn't tighten the lug nut enough.

Took it out for a spin last night while it was raining.

Update: Decided to lower my XV-01 for the tarmac look. Picked up a set of HPI TE37's, painted them gold. Mounted them on a set of Tamiya semi-slick tires.

I did realized that my rear end is a bit higher compare to the front after I took those pics.
