Default Pinion Movement, Shimming?

Awesome Forum for a newb to reference on his first kit build.

My Question is, How much in and out movement should I look for in the pinion shaft.

Do I shim the pinion shaft from the inside to tighten up the mesh?

Don’t shim. The driveshaft will pull it back into place.

Ideally there should be no in and out movement from the pinion once the driveshaft is installed.

if necessary, a shim can be added to the exposed pinion gear shaft (outside of the housing) before the driveshaft is installed.

Ideally you want 0 in and out slop on the pinion with the driveshaft attached. Adding shins between the pinion gear and inner bearing will tighten the mesh, adding shims on the outside of the housing before the driveshaft goes on will increase the backlash. You want as little backlash as possible without binding or notchiness. The spool can also be shimmed to adjust backlash and side-side play in the housing. Your shims should match the ID of the corresponding bearing. Koyosho, Yokohama, CRC and others offer shim packs of various thicknesses.

It's pretty rare I build an axle and it can't benefit from at least a .10mm thick shim somewhere.
